Chapter Text
Veronica
I can’t sleep. I lay tossing and turning on my bed, the wind blowing through my slightly ajar window. I lightly tiptoe over to my desk, put my glasses back on, and open up my diary. Writing in it always helps me sleep.
September 18, 1989
Dear Diary,
The Heathers added someone new today. His name is JD and he’s funny, smart, good-looking, and he actually gets my Baudelaire references. He knows Baudelaire!!! We might be the only two people in the school who know shit about poetry, but at least the second person is him! I don’t know how or why he got added to the most popular clique in school, but hey, I’m not mad.
The Heathers aren’t one to just randomly add people (I mean, they did add me on the first day of school), but that’s besides the point. He doesn’t exactly fit into our image: a group of red, yellow, green, and blue seem perfectly fine, but black being added into the color scheme would be a bit off putting.
Goodnight diary, I’m getting tired.
I close my diary and return back to my bed, but now there’s a new feeling keeping me awake. Why was I thinking about JD and why does thinking about him keep me up? Whatever. I brushed it off, thinking it was just that fact that he was new and shit.
JD
Today, the green Heather kept looking at me weirdly. That’s why I was a little taken aback when the red Heather recruited me. To be honest, I took their offer because there was a girl in the group who wasn’t like the others. I soon learned her name to be Veronica. She was on my mind the entire day, and still is at 11:38pm. God, I can’t stop thinking about that girl. I tried sleeping, but it was no use. Then I tried going to the Snappy Snack Shack, but somehow, for the first time, it didn’t work. This is fucking hell, but if I could choose anyone to be on my mind, it would be her. I know I just met her, but she’s amazing. She’s so understanding and caring and actually has a soul, unlike Duke or Chandler.
Ugh, this is so unlike me, I’ve never felt this way about someone. I mean, I’ve liked some girls here and there, but I’ve never gotten the chance to actually form something with them, given that Dad and I are always on the move. Usually, I wouldn’t bother to learn people’s faces and names, but this girl’s name is imprinted into my mind. Veronica Sawyer.
A few hours have passed, and all I can think about is Veronica. I’m going insane. I guess I just have to accept that Veronica Sawyer is going to be on my mind forever.
Chandler
I look at the clock on my nightstand; it’s 12:00pm. Time to give my eyes a rest. Today is one of the rare days I don’t have a party to go to. And it’s not like I wasn’t invited, there were just no parties around. I pull my red silk sleeping mask over my head, pushing my blonde curls aside and I lay down on my bed. I’m gonna sleep well tonight, I just know it. Besides, how could I not? A few days ago, Duke told me that she had her eye on the new kid, JD. So, with a little convincing, I got him to join the Heathers (and Veronica). This is just the beginning of my little setup. Jesus, I’m a fucking mastermind. I hope Duke doesn’t get the wrong impression: I’m not doing this for her. I’m doing this to build my persuasion skills. Her liking for the new kid was just practice for the future. I go to sleep with a smile on my face, dreaming about my reign over Westerberg.
How is it morning already? It feels like I just went to sleep a few seconds ago. Whatever, I have to get ready for school.
I beat my face with makeup, do my hair, put on my red blazer and skirt, blah blah blah. I’ve been doing the same thing for years now, it’s no different today, except for the fact that this is JD’s first full day of being with the Heathers (and Vee). I skip breakfast like I always do because I’m not hungry, and drive in my Porsche (red, of course) up to Westerberg High.
Duke
This is the first time I’m grateful for Heather. This is worth all of the times Heather told me to shut up. I can’t believe she actually got JD to join. Like, actually. He looked like he wasn’t one to easily get persuaded, but Heather works magic with her silver tongue. I need to learn that skill. I make an effort to look extra good today, so JD will notice me. I’m in the most popular clique at school, I can get any guy I want. I’m so excited that I forget to eat. I pop 2 sticks of mint gum in my mouth, not caring about the calories, and do my hair, my makeup, and put on my outfit. Green blazer, black skirt, and green knee-high socks.
I spray on this flowery perfume that smells of roses, and rush downstairs as I hear a honk. Heather’s bright red car is waiting in the middle of the road. Heather Mac is already in there, waving to me out the open window. She’s too good for this world. I wave back and open the door to the passenger seat, but Heather swats me away.
“Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast? Passenger is for Vee. We’ve been doing this for 2 weeks now.”
“Sorry Heather…” I mumble and open the back door where Mac is waiting. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend like Vee sitting in the passenger seat isn’t hurting, especially since I used to sit in the passenger, but whatever. Number one rule: don’t fight with Heather. Just ignore her insults and move on with the day. I’ve been doing this since middle school: it’s easy enough now.
“Such a pillowcase…” Heather mumbles at the front of the car. She jerks the car left, and off we go to Vee’s house.
Macnamara
The car is filled with tension and flowery perfume; it always is when Heather and Heather argue. I just have to keep a smile plastered on my face and not aggravate them. Easy enough, right? I do feel slightly bad for Duke, though. She’s being replaced by Vee, I guess that hurts. I love Vee though, don’t get me wrong. But I feel sympathy for everyone. Heather tells me I’m too nice. She told me that I need to “spread my wings and fly.” Whatever that means.
I’m so lost in my own thoughts that I don’t notice we’ve pulled up at Vee’s house. I only snap out of it when I hear Heather honk. Vee runs outside and says good morning to everyone. No one else says good morning to me. That’s what I love about Vee. I’m the only one that says good morning back and she gets in the passenger. From far away, we must look like a bunch of crayons in a car. Bright red, dark green, dark blue, and butter yellow.
In ten-ish minutes, we pull up to Westerberg. We’re not late this time, which is rare. We spill out of the red car after Heather does the most horrendous parking job I’ve ever seen. People stop and stare at us for a little bit, because yeah, we might as well run the school. Out the corner of my eye, I see JD leaning on his motorcycle, wearing a tank top, jeans, a trench coat, and to top it all off, a blue raspberry slushie from the Snappy Snack Shack. He doesn’t seem like the type to get added into the most popular group at Westerberg, but apparently it’s a part of Heather’s master plan to get Duke and JD to happen. Then again, Vee didn’t look like someone who could even look in our direction, but we fixed her up and now she’s a part of our group.
He’s staring straight at Vee, a slight smile playing on his lips. Vee is staring straight back, the same smile back on her face. I have a speculation that JD has a crush on Vee, and vice versa. That’s not going to turn out well, though, since Duke likes him and Vee’s in the group. Heather walks over to him, her red heels clacking on the concrete and grabs his arm to bring him over, and all five of us walk towards the school.
