After Veronica’s mum finds out about JD and throws her out, Veronica ends up with nowhere to go. JD finds her and takes her in—only for them to discover his dad has abandoned him too. With no support and no real plan, they end up in a cheap motel, forced to rely entirely on each other.
From there, the story follows them trying to survive: financially, emotionally, and morally. They clash over JD’s more dangerous instincts while Veronica starts setting boundaries instead of going along with everything. At the same time, they share small, intimate moments—late-night conversations, quiet comfort, teaching each other things, pretending to be normal for a few hours.
Nights are the hardest. They hold each other through nightmares and panic, but the comfort never fully fixes anything—it just makes the emptiness slightly easier to bear.
Eventually, instead of everything exploding, they hit a turning point: Veronica refuses to stay if JD keeps spiralling. That forces him to confront himself—not perfectly, but enough to stop going further.
They end up moving into a small, imperfect place together, building something fragile and real. It’s not healthy, not stable, and not at all fixed… but it’s chosen -

Summary
If love worked like the system, Heather would have found a work-around way to marry a woman even before it was legal, acceptance in her small minded Middle America state and somehow a way to conjure a child out of thin air. As is, however, love proves to be way more difficult to find and maintain than power and success, even within the still extremely misogynistic climate of late 2000s Ohio. Nevertheless, not even careers are exempt from being influenced by matters of the heart and Heather will have to find a way to cope when the biggest opportunity of her life comes with the most painful baggage.
Many moons ago, Heather and Veronica promised each other their futures. A compromise so they could both be happy and, most importantly, together. Time shattered that illusion and they both went their separate ways. 20 years later, Heather is the senior assistant prosecutor investigating the case of a murder in her very own district.
