   本文以《吕祖全书》《集仙传》《枕中记》及诸道书杂传为底本改编。钟离权取东汉将门出身说，字云房，燕台侯次子；吕洞宾取河中府永乐县人氏，名岩，字洞宾。二人平生事迹于道书有载，然三生前缘纯属私设，不附会正传。
   文仿明清白话章回体，间以诗词。诗词用韵一依旧制。回末“正是”诗依小说旧例。书中虽托名东汉，器物官制兼采汉唐，以叙事方便为先，不苛求史实。
   文章慢热，三世铺陈，以剧情为主。
