Peter Parker had been to stark industries before.
Technically.
There’s a big difference between going as Tony Starks new and totally cool intern and going for a school science trip with his class. And that class includes flash. It doesn’t really help that Ned decided to tell everyone that Peter had been to stark industries before. It helps even less when their teacher tells them there’s a chance they might be able to meet Mr Stark. Or even the avengers.
All of this added together meant flash would be making fun of him the whole way there. The whole time there. And the whole way back.
“Hey Parker! So what? Are we gonna see you get super special treatment just because you’ve been here before? Oooo I know Starks gonna pull you aside and give you a big fat hug because you guys are soooooo close!”
A chorus of giggles floated across the bus and Peter just sank even further into his seat trying to hide his embarrassment. Yeah. This is gonna be a long day.
The bus slowed to a stop in front of the massive stark building, more commonly known as the avengers tower, and Mr Harrington stood up, shushing everyone to the best of his abilities.
“Okay everyone. Now I want you to be on your best behaviour while we’re here! No funny business. No running off. I want you all to follow the rules they give you and represent our school the best you can! Okay?”
He stood still for a second obviously expecting a response but when he realised a bunch on 16 year olds weren’t going to do that he sighed and told everyone to get off the bus.
The entry is massive. Peters been there plenty of times but the sheer size of it never ceases to amaze him. Everyone seems to be thinking the same thing as him because for about 5 minutes, while Mr Harrington talks to the office lady, they’re all looking around admiring the size.
“Okay everyone! Gather over here for me! Thank you, thank you. Cool! Well everyone welcome to stark industries. It’s an absolute pleasure for us to be able to host you here and give you a tour around the building and maybe teach you about some things but I know you kids! You won’t remember anything too complicated on a school trip!”
Everyone smiled at her in a way that acknowledges she’s trying to make us laugh even if it doesn’t work.
“Okay so my names Susan. I’m just here to get you inside with no trouble and explain some rules then I’ll hand you over to my colleague who will be your tour guide and helper for the day okay? First thing I’m going to need everyone to do is step through this metal detector right here and put their bags through that machine there just to check for anything that could be dangerous”.
All the student begin to file up in a line to go through the machine while Susan keeps talking.
“Then I’m gonna need you to come over to me to give you a temporary guest pass! All you’ll need to give me is your full name and then you can use the pass to head through to those seats over there. Okay?”
When she finished the line finally began to move. Peter and Ned were towards the back while Mj was a few people infront of them.
“Hey Peter” Ned started poking him on the shoulder.
“Yeah?”
“So like, do you know these people?”
“A few of them yeah. The guy doing the machines called Bob. He’s a nice guy!”
“Woahhhhh cool!”
The line moved forward again.
“Next!”
Peter hadn’t realised he was already at the front of the line so he moved forward quickly trying not to get noticed by the employees who knew him by name, but of course the world always seems to be against him.
“Oh what’s up Peter? How’s school going?”
Bob had recognised him.
“Oh. Oh yeah it’s um it’s going well thanks!”
He tried to give Bob a look to tell him that now is not a great time but he doesn’t get the memo.
“Oh good! Exams coming up soon huh? Good luck with those. God knows how you manage all that and-“
“Ah yeah the exams are soon but hey you know me! Love to work hard!! See you later Bob”
“Haha see you kid”
Everyone was staring at him. It’s fine! He’ll just say he’s friends with his aunt May? Yeah sure that’ll do.
Flash walks up to him before he can go to Susan.
“So, penis Parker! You just know people here huh? Do you working on clean up duty with them?”
God Flash always knew how to be rude.
“No he’s a family friend. Now I’ve got to go get my pass.”
The best thing to do with flash sometimes is to walk away as quick as you can before he’s able to put in another word.
Thankfully he didn’t have to wait long in line and before he knew it, Susan was asking for his name.
“Peter Parker.”
“…”
“Peter! Oh my it’s lovely to see you again! Oh honey you should’ve brought your usual pass with you and you could’ve straight up to Mr Stark!”
“Oh sorry Susan I’m actually here on a school trip. I’m trying to keep my internship on the down low, could you help a bit? You know maybe stop other employees before they say hi?”
“Oh sorry honey I didn’t think of that! Of course I can. Hang on I’ll send Mr Stark and email telling him what’s going on so he doesn’t drag you away to the lab like usual!”
“Oh wait n-“
“Okay all done! Here’s your guest pass! It was nice to meet you Mr Parker” she winks at him with a giggle and he walks off.
Oh no. Oh god. He’s so screwed now.
About 10 minutes later everyone was finally ready for the tour. So, as Susan promised, she walked them over to a new lady who Peter of course recognised as Emma. She was a very nice lady who helped Peter through the building a lot when he was first interning.
Shes also very English and energetic. But that’s what’s so cool about her!
“Hello everyone!! It’s lovely to meet you. I’m Emma and I’ll be your tour guide today!! So first before I take you anywhere, does anybody have any questions about their trip so far? I’ll answer them to the best of my ability!”
A few people put their hands up.
“Oh amazing! so many hands! Okay sorry I don’t know your name lovely but what’s your question?”
“What time is lunch?”
“Haha teens and their food huh? Lunch time for you today will be at 1 o’clock in the restaurant section of the building. You can either buy some food or if you’ve brought anything with you, you can eat that!”
“How much money does Mr Stark make in a year?”
“Oh well um I’m so sorry but I actually don’t know the answer to that! Many people tend to keep their earnings to themselves so it’s never come up! But between me and you and it’s a hell of a lot”
More students kept putting their hand up and asking questions until Mr Harrington put it to a stop, telling everyone that actually, we do need to keep going instead of asking questions at the start.
Emma looked quite grateful at that.
“okay so as you came in you entered the lobby of the building. As you may have noticed on the walls we have holographic images of achievements through the years from our current CEO Tony stark to our founder Howard Stark! We as a company like to remember how we came to be, so it’s quite important for our beginnings to be shown to everyone!”
Peter already knows this all. He got pretty much the same tour when he first came here. The problem is he was so nervous the first time he couldn’t bring himself to ask any questions. But now that he’s less nervous, he wants to ask all the questions he had then and more. But he’s trying to stay on the down low so he’ll just have to ask Mr Stark when he next sees him.
Emma, although Peter loves her, does drown on a bit so sometimes it’s easier to just space out a bit. But there’s just a noise that he can hear that puts him off. Only slightly. Nothing dangerous because his sense would warn him but the sound. It’s so odd yet familiar?
They’re walking now. Down a corridor and the sound. It’s getting to much louder. It’s like right abov-
Thump.
Oh my god someone’s fallen out the vents.
Oh my god it’s Clint.
Emma doesn’t seem that surprised but everyone else is in a state of shock. From the fact that someone’s just fallen from the ceiling. And from the fact that it’s an avenger.
“Oh shi- oh my god my back Jesus fucking Christ!”
“…”
“Sorry everyone didn’t mean to scare you I was just um doing some um like maintenance! Yeah maintenance! You know how the vents in a big building can get! Very dusty and things… okay well I’ll leave you guys to it! Have fun! Maybe I’ll see you later?”
While everyone’s still in shock peters staring at Clint. And Clint winks at him. He winks. He fucking winks.
They’re all out to get him. He knows it.
If only Susan hadn’t sent him an email he might’ve been good for the day.
Mj and Ned begin walking up to him. They know something’s up but Peter doesn’t know if he should tell them and if they’ll make it worse if he does. No actually they might make it worse if he doesn’t.
“Peter dude you good?” Ned is such a good guy.
“Yeah bro sorry it’s just. I think all the avengers might make it their mission to mess with me today? Earlier I asked Susan if she could try keep me on the down low but then she did that by emailing Mr Stark and telling him to keep me on the down low. I don’t think she realises that he might just make it worse because I’m pretty sure he’s told everyone to try embarrass me.”
“Oh wow Mr Stark is such a cool dude for that”
“Really Mj your on his side?”
“Hey! I’m just choosing the winning team here”
Yeah they’re gonna make it worse.
About an hour later Emma was showing them the corridor for the science labs. She told them all that no they weren’t allowed inside because of dangerous substances but while everyone else seemed pretty down, Peter didn’t mind. He’d been in them plenty of times anyway. Bruce was always working with Peter when Tony was busy. Hey he even had his own lab coat now.
Recently Peter had been showing Bruce what he was originally using to make his web fluid before Mr Stark had showed up. It wasn’t too complicated but he always had to be quite resourceful since they weren’t easy materials to get.
Suddenly everyone came to a stop and Peter felt like now was a good time to actually focus.
“Well everyone I know you’ve all been dying to meet some avengers and though we had a brief meeting with one earlier it wasn’t great! Now he’s probably to busy to come out and talk but we may be able to get him to wave at us through the window”
“Um excuse me? What avenger are we talking about?”
“Oh my mistake! You may not realise it’s him as he’s in his human form but it’s the hulk!”
That got everyone’s attention.
Suddenly they were all dying to just get a wave from him while Peter was just trying to move towards the back so Bruce wouldn’t notice him. Thankfully flash actually helped with that as he shoved Peter out the way so he could get a good view.
“Sir!”
“Yes Mj?”
“Flash just shoved Peter out the way so now Peter can’t see the hulk!”
This is why he shouldn’t have told them. Damn you Mj.
“Oh my Peter come on now let’s get you to the front so you can get a good view.”
Mr Harrington began pushing Peter through all the others in such an embarrassing way that he wanted the earth to swallow him whole.
He finally got to the front and Bruce was right there. Waving at all his classmates. And the he noticed Peter and a bright smile grew on his face.
Now that would’ve been lovely in a different context but again. Peters trying to be in the down low and this has not helped his case at all.
Bruce was waving at Peter and trying to mouth something at him but all he could manage was a small smile and wave before being shoved out the way again by flash.
This however was met by a small look of confusion from Bruce who must’ve then realised what was going on.
he really hopes Bruce doesn’t mention this to Mr Stark.
Finally lunch time. Where he can be completely free from embarrassing avengers.
“Hey guys I’m gonna go grab some food! I forgot my lunch at home today.”
“Okay we’ll find a good table then!”
“Hang on Ned, I forgot my drink at home too so I’ll grab one with Peter”
“Okay cool! Don’t be too long”
The line was long. Very long. The guy at the counter was pretty slow. It didn’t help make the line go any faster though when Peter was taking too long to decide what he wanted.
“Excuse me young man”
The man behind him spoke up. He was old and had white hair and a white moustache. He had these dark tinted sunglasses on as well which the guy definitely couldn’t see out of.
“Could you hurry up? I’m not getting any younger here”
“Oh yeah sorry! Um I’ll have the tuna sub and a coke?”
After finally getting his meal, him and Mj walked over to Ned who was playing a game on his phone.
“Oh hey guys. You took a while”
“Yeah lines was long”
“Sure you just couldn’t decide what to eat?”
“Shutup.”
About ten minutes went by with the three of them chatting about god knows what, when a man walks into the area.
“Excuse me! Does anyone have any pop tarts?”
His voice was low and loud and Peter thought he might just recognise it. He turned around to see Thor of all people. And asking for pop tarts.
After no one was replying he began to look around until he locked his eyes on Peter and smiled. He so knew what he was doing.
“Ah ha!” He was walking over. “Young Parker! Do you have any pop tarts?”
Everyone was staring now. Way to go Thor.
“Um… no?”
“Well. I’m disappointed. You usually do! That’s okay I’ll just have to go into Peppers fridge and blame it on someone else”
Peter just stared in horror and turned back to the table.
yeah no one’s going to believe Thors story.
“This is the worst day of my life.”
“Peter I think you might just be overreacting a bit”
“No Ned seriously. I might just die of embarrassment.”
“I mean at least you’re proving Flash wrong? This kinda shows you do have an internship and that you know the avengers? Hey! People will really like you now!”
“Thanks dude”
“Okay everyone! We’ve got two more areas to visit today and then it’s about time you lot head back home!”
To say that Peter is relieved is an understatement. Only two more areas and then he can go home. Maybe patrol a little. Talk to May about his day. Go to sleep. Absolute heaven.
“So today stark industries decided to show you guys something else that not many people get to see. We’re going to look at where the avengers train every now and then! And I’ve been told if we’re lucky we might be able to see one of them training!”
Oh this was so planned. Mr Stark definitely organised this. One of them has got to be there. But which one is the question.
“I’m just going to go check if anyone’s in there then I’ll come back and get you okay?”
Emma disappeared through the doors and everyone began murmuring excitedly. What if there is someone in there? Peter is so screwed.
Not long after she left Emma appeared again and gave them a nod of excitement.
“Okay then guys, just through these doors please. When you go in make sure to not get in the way of anyone training and please don’t touch any equipment you aren’t permitted to touch.”
All the students started towards the door buzzing to see what heroes were inside. From Emma’s reaction they expected one hero. But not two. And especially not captain flipping America and black fucking widow.
What the fuck.
There they were. Sparing casually like this is a normal occasion when Peter fully knows that this is the first time they’ve ever let anyone else see them train. They hate him. They have to, to make today so torturous.
“So as you can see the avengers use this area to practice fighting, lifting weights, their agility and more. It’s a great place for them to use their abilities without the possibility of hurting someone else and if they do it’s in a controlled environment so they can easily seek medical attention.”
By now Nat and Steve stopped fighting each other, now taking a breather and a drink.
Then Nat looks over at Peter and smiles. That smile like she’s about to do something evil. God help him.
“Hey Peter! You better beat me next time we spar okay?”
Flash looked around at him. Then burst out laughing.
“Hahahaha!!! Parker oh my god you can’t even beat a girl in a fight? Jesus I knew you were weak but not that weak!”
He’s so stupid. Nat is going to eat him alive.
“Oh I’m sorry. What’s your name kid?” Nat smiled at him warmly.
“The names Flash”
“Flash huh. Well, wanna try beat me in a fight?”
Suddenly Mr Harrington looked panicked.
“Oh I’m sorry we can’t have the kids fight. You know parental issues.”
“Thats cool! How about an arm wrestle then?”
“Oh yeah that should be okay. Just don’t hurt anyone or get hurt”
At that Nat gave him a thumbs up and turned back to flash.
“Good with that kid?”
Flash gave her a nod. And it began. Then it ended. Because Nat is extremely strong even if she doesn’t look it.
Steve gave a small laugh at how confused Flash seemed then gave him a pat on the back.
“Don’t worry kid. Even i struggle beating her sometimes.”
At that Flash just walked away, face red. He was quiet the rest of the day. Thankfully because of that incident, everyone else seemed to forget when Nat told Peter to beat her the next time they sparred. Thank god.
Apparently the last area they were headed to was the offices. And guess who was often seen there? Tony Stark. Great.
Peter knew he was the one organising this whole meet the avengers and have them embarrass Peter thing. But would he actually show up? Who knows. Tony stark works in mysterious ways.
“Okay everyone! We won’t be here long so we don’t interrupt everyone’s work, but this is where a lot of people in the industry will work or have meetings! I’m pretty sure a meeting is happening right now so we have to be quiet although I think it’s nearly finished. Who knows maybe Tony Stark will be in there!”
Is she trying to foreshadow?
“For now we’ll go into this meeting room here and I’ll talk more about how the business works on a day to day basis”
The group of 20 or so teens pile up into the room and take a seat, listening on for about half an hour on how the business works in marketing, production and finally answering any questions that weren’t answered earlier.
Then finally. The day is done. And Peter hasn’t seen Mr Stark. So far.
As they’re walking out of the office area someone comes into view. Tony stark comes into view.
Everyone realises but because he’s looks so busy they decide to not say anything and internally freak. What no one expects is for Tony to walk past Peter and ruffle his hair. Heck. Even Peter wasn’t expecting that.
He ignores all and any questions about Tony Stark being his adoptive father, secret love child, family. He just wants to get on that bus and go home.
And when he does get on the bus he only has one thing left to do.
