Chapter 1
a warm welcome

If there’s one thing that Sophie never liked about going to college in Ohio was that the weather was the exact same in Michigan. So she never got to experience living somewhere new and with completely different weather, maybe she wished she went down to Florida to experience the sun 24/7 but she chose ohio state university for her passion, not the weather, or even the fact that her family was only 3 hours away. Ever since Sophie was a kid she knew art and design was her passion, being around her mother a lot, who she got the passion from.
Sophie loved the freedom college gave her, being able to do almost whatever she wanted without having her family worry about her. Her father Jack, who had advocated for her to let loose and enjoy college, while her mother Rosemary would’ve gone with Sophie if it weren’t for her job and Sophie’s other two siblings, Edd and Molly. When Sophie was packing for college, Molly cried and cried when she was getting in her car to leave, begging Sophie to bring her with her.
“Sophie please!!! I can sleep on the floor or even in a beanbag chair or even be your roommate! I'm sure the school wouldn’t mind!” Molly was hugging Sophie’s leg while they stood in the driveway, Sophie laughed and tried to even hold back some of her own tears she was trying not to shed. While Edd stood there and laughed at this moment. Jack and Rose stood on the porch watching the scene, Rose clutching Jacks arm tight and burying her face in his shoulder. During this moment, Felix had snagged a photo and had later given it to Sophie to take with her.

Jenny’s voice broke Sophie out of her thoughts as she held the picture in her hand.
“Soph, are you almost ready? They’re about to start signing people out, just wanting to make sure you’re all packed.” Jenny, Sophie’s girlfriend of a year, stepped in the room and moved to grab one of Sophie’s suitcases.
“Hey! Be careful with that please, some of my art stuff is in there,” Sophie said quickly as she rushed over to Jenny to grab the suitcase. Their hands brushed before Jenny took a small step back.
“You’re seriously going to be drawing and painting when you’re home? Don’t you wanna, i dont know maybe take these three weeks we get off to relax?” Jenny said with a little chuckle as she watched Sophie grab the rest of her stuff.
“Well, its just a couple of things I’ve been working on for the restaurant and stuff, plus I’ve learned a lot in this first semester already.”
“I guess thats true, it’ll be nice to see everyone again thats for sure.”
Sophie nodded her head and smiled at the thought of being home. Being busy with college made one forget how homesick they are, always having something due that second.
”Well, we should get moving, I'm not really wanting to take forever on the road you know.” Jenny hummed as she took Sophie’s suitcase, again but more gentler, now knowing the continents inside.

As Sophie and Jenny walked through the dorms and down to the exit where a small line had already formed, everyone was already checking out, since the college took these three weeks to clean the place, and needed to know who would be staying on campus as well. Jenny groaned at how long the line was and shook her head.
“Man we’re gonna be so late.”
“Babe it’s only ten in the morning, i really doubt we’re gonna be that late.” Sophie laughed as she stuck her head out to the side to see just how long the line was.
“Yeah but soph you know how i get about driving in this snowy crap, its awful you know.” Jenny shook her head at the thought, praying the roads weren’t too bad at this time. Both Michigan and Ohio were in a snow warning here in the next couple of days, everyone preparing for it in both states.
“That’s fair, but I don't think we are supposed to get a whole lot of snow in the next hours, the forecast is calling for some flurries and that's all.”
“But you and I know both know that the weathermen cannot given an accurate forecast of the weather,” Jenny said as a matter of a fact
Sophie laughed at her before she nodded her head.
“You’re right, you’re right, but come on, you and I both know that it's not going to get any worse than what they’re saying.”
Sophie and Jenny both moved up in the line, getting closer and closer till they could finally get out of here and start the drive.
After standing in line for five more minutes, they finally reached the front and signed out. Stepping outside into the chilly air, they both let out a breath which turned into condensation. They shuffled closer together as they made their way to Jenny’s Ramcharger, a gift from her grandparents for the beginning of her freshman year. Jenny took lots of care with her car, being very strict with what was tolerated and what wasn’t in her car. Sophie always poked fun at her for it. But Sophie knew she loved it, she also knew that it being Jenny’s senior year in college, it fared pretty well compared to other peoples cars she knew.
They loaded their stuff in the trunk before they quickly got into the car. The engine roared to life as Jenny quickly turned on the heat for them both. Sophie curled up in the passenger seat while Jenny backed out of the parking space. The streets are busy with other students going home. Jenny turned on the radio to whatever station was playing when she last got into the car. She drummed her fingers along to the beat on the wheel as they were stopped at the light. Sophie, already with a notebook in her lap.
”Whatcha working on there babe?” Jenny asked as she quickly glanced over to see the artwork Sophie was working on before the light turned green
”oh, just some character artwork for the showstoppers is all. They’re fun to draw, especially in different art styles.”
“Ahh, I see. You gonna show your mom some of it? I'm sure she’ll love to see what you’ve learned.”
Sophie smiled and nodded as she looked over at Jenny. “course I will, she’s been mailing me some of her designs and what shes been working on back home, and this time she asked me to design a new character.”
“Oh really? That’ll be interesting to see.”
”Yeah apparently my dad and uncle Felix have been wanting to explore new themes. It’ll be interesting to see what they do.”
”Oh for sure, they do an amazing job with the animatronics anyways, plus it’ll be good to see something new.”
Jenny started to accelerate as she got onto the ramp to merge onto the highway.
”Yeah, it will be.” Sophie said with a smile as she looked out the window, the flurries falling gracefully through the sky and onto the car.
