Chapter Text

The autumn frost clings to the single-pane windows of St. Brigid’s, but inside the strict dormitory, the air smells perpetually of floor polish and damp wool, but tonight the sharp draft off the Dublin hills is softened inside Room 4. The narrow room smells of damp wool and carbolic soap. In the dim spill of moonlight, twelve-year-old Bernadette “Blue” O’Malley sits cross-legged on her iron cot, her knuckles white around a wooden horn comb. Before her sits Sarah Murphy, bathed in the dim amber wash of a streetlamp filtering through the window. Blue carefully works the bristles through Sarah’s hair. It is long, fine, and golden—so pale it almost glows in the shadows.

To Blue, who has spent her twelve years dodging harsh words and cold looks, Sarah looks like the statues of angels in the chapel, possessing a gentle, unbothered stillness to match. It is magnificent hair—a heavy, cascading mantle of spun gold that catches whatever light exists in the room. To Blue, Sarah looks like a stained-glass angel dropped straight out of the chapel window. She has the gentle spirit to match, a soft-spoken girl who arrived at Larch Hill only three weeks ago after the state inspectors stepped in.

Sarah shifts slightly, her eyes cast down toward her lap. Everyone knows the quiet whisper of the story: Sarah’s father, deep in the drink again, had turned his fists on her mother until the neighbors called the guards. The government declared the household unfit, tearing Sarah away from the only life she knew and dumping her here among the quiet, shivering girls of St. Brigid’s.

“Thank you, Blue,” Sarah murmurs, her voice barely louder than the scrape of the comb against her scalp. She tilts her head back, offering a small, fragile smile that makes Blue’s chest ache with an fierce, protective warmth. "That feels lovely, so it does."

Before Blue can answer, the heavy, rhythmic thud of leather boots echoes down the wooden floorboards of the corridor. It's the cruel Sister Agnes making her nightly rounds for Lights Out. Sarah’s eyes widen in practiced fear; she slips off the bed like a ghost and crouching low behind the iron bed frame, holding her breath against the dust. The heavy oak door creaks open, casting a tall, angular shadow across the room. Sister Agnes pauses in the doorway, her habit swishing with rigid authority, rustling like dry leaves. Her sharp gaze sweeps the room, looking for any infraction. She pauses, sniffing the air as if searching for disobedience, before pulling the door shut with a heavy latch.

The moment the footsteps fade toward the far end of the hall, Sarah creeps back out. Instead of returning to her own narrow cot, she slides under Blue’s threadbare wool blanket, shivering against the night chill. They huddle close, shoulder to shoulder, sharing the scarce warmth. Sarah closes her eyes, wraps her fingers tight around her rosary beads, and begins her quiet nightly ritual. In a hushed, trembling whisper, she offers up her prayers to the Virgin Mary for her bruised, bedridden mother back home, begging for her recovery and protection. Blue listens silently, staring at the whitewashed ceiling, swallowing the lump in her throat until Sarah’s breathing slows into sleep.

Morning brings no comfort, only the harsh clanging of the wake-up bell and an unyielding disaster. By midday, word spreads through the hall like wildfire: a dandruff outbreak has taken hold in the lower dormitories. Sister Agnes seizes upon the news with ruthless efficiency. In the drafty washroom, she sets up a high wooden stool and retrieves a pair of heavy, rusted iron shears. One by one, the girls are forced to sit while the Sister chops away their hair without an ounce of mercy. Sister Agnes works through the line of girls without an ounce of pity, but when Sarah steps forward, the nun’s mouth tightens into a grim line. She gathers the cascading golden hair in one large hand.

She grabs a thick fistful of Sarah’s radiant golden tresses, positioning the cold blades right against the nape of her neck.

“Please, Sister! No, please, God, don't!” Sarah begs, her voice cracking into high, desperate sobs. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she twines her fingers into the skirt of the nun’s habit, pleading for the one piece of home she has left. “I’ll wash it every day! I'll scrub it with the hard soap, I promise!”

"Silence, girl," Sister Agnes snaps, completely unbothered by the child's terror.

Sister Agnes does not hesitate. Snip. Snip. The shears snap shut with a sickening, metallic crunch. Locks of bright, angel-soft gold fall in heavy clumps to the wet tile floor, landing like ruined silk in the dust. Sarah hides her face in her hands, quivering violently. Her shoulders heave as the cold air strikes the back of her newly exposed neck or the metal shears scrape roughly against her bare scalp, shearing away every bit of her beauty until nothing remains but jagged, prickly patches. It is a calculated humiliation, a cruel tearing away of the one thing that made Sarah feel like herself. Blue stands in line, her blood boiling, her hands balled into tight fists as she watches the sheer cruelty unfold.

The humiliation does not end in the washroom. Later that afternoon, the visiting parlor is suffocatingly quiet. Mrs. Maguire, visiting the school to drop off mended linens, pauses in the courtyard near the girls. She looks at Sarah’s raw, uneven scalp, then glances over at Blue, whose own hair is cropped close and uneven. She offers a careless laugh.

“Well now,” Mrs. Maguire remarks casually to the supervising nun, “it seems Blue’s hair has always managed to look better a bit longer, hasn't it?”

She says it without a grain of malice, completely ignorant of the terror and tears that took place in the washroom hours before, but the comment cuts like a fresh blade. Sarah flinches, lowering her eyes to her shoes, her small hands clenching into tight fists inside her apron pockets as some other girls giggle nervously.

When evening falls, Blue pulls Sarah into the shadowed alcove beneath the stairwell. Sarah is crying again, silent, chest-heaving tears of pure trauma and embarrassment. Blue reaches out, her fingers gently trailing over the prickly, shaved stubble of Sarah’s head, stroking the bristly patch where the silky golden waves used to be, and feeling the warmth of her friend's trembling skin. Blue’s eyes darken with an absolute, unshakeable resolve.

Sarah looks up, her eyes rimmed in red as Blue leans in close, her voice a low, fierce promise against Sarah’s ear. "She's a wicked old bat," Blue whispers, her voice steady and laced with fierce devotion; her eyes flashing with defiance. "I swear to God Above, she’s not getting away with this. I'm going to get revenge—I’m going to make sure that wicked Sister Agnes catches the dandruff too. Just you wait and see.”
