Work Text:
Namjoon is caught by Jungkook when he passes by him, pulled closer as if he’s lifeless. He protests, wordlessly for a moment, before Jungkook brushes his lips against his temple and his arms around his waist in a loose dance hold. As soon as Namjoon feels Jungkook’s embrace, the heat seeping through the layers of his skin, he melts.
Wise men say
Only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you…
“I love this song,” Jungkook whispers against Namjoon’s hairline. Namjoon, who didn’t even hear the musical notes playing, is too immersed in going over his to-do list and making a beeline for the wine he knows Jungkook would have put out on the side. It is bitter and vinegary, but hey. It’s refreshing. “Dance with me.”
Namjoon feels his shoulders fall without even thinking about it, the tension dropping from his muscles. The sweet sweet scent of Jungkook’s cologne wafts through his nose. He let his head tilt forward until it rested on Jungkook’s shoulder, his whole body relaxing as he settled into the hold.
He wants to sleep. All he want to do was crawl into bed and pull the covers up over his face until he could forget the rubbish day, the extremely difficult client, and the idiotic colleagues that have been giving him a tough time lately.
It is an effort on most days to get up and go to work. Namjoon worked in a tiny law firm with, nagging CEO and overachieving superiors that constantly had him on his toes. Don’t get him wrong, he loves his job. It was on top of the list when he graduated from Law School, working as a freelancer wanting to bring change in society, making the most of his degree. But sometimes he so wishes to give it all up and just sleep for 18 hours straight. Though they, his team, get on well, and they keep afloat well too, it was a big step down from where he’d been before. It has been a culture shock like none other to be thrown from a world of comfort to the one he is in now. He was never the one to save money before, not having to worry about paying all of the bills before the electricity was cut off or whether he would have enough to splurge on a fancy takeaway at the end of the week.
The step down is worth it, though. All of it is worth it to come home to a smiling Jungkook dancing around the kitchen in pajamas and socks.
Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be…
If there is a choice between Jungkook and that life, well. It is never a choice.
He wishes that he could give Jungkook more, to buy him little presents on his way back home. He’d love to see how Jungkook glowed under his guise, to give him the whole world just like Jungkook deserves, but it is hard.
Those days are the worst when Namjoon feels like a failure. Coming home to a happy Jungkook is always a kick and makes him want to bury his head in shame. How could he face Jungkook, sunshine personified, the love of his life, when he’d screw up so badly? Screwed up and lost another not-for-profit case, so they’d have to scrimp even harder to make the rent. Jungkook needs someone who would spoil him, who could whisk him off on a holiday just because he fleetingly said that he has gotten bored with the city.
Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you…
“I love you,” Jungkook whispers into Namjoon’s hair, and Namjoon’s eyes slip shut. Jungkook has a knack for things. Fixing the blender? He got it. The shower’s not working? He got it. Bad day? Only a touch is enough.
“Are you listening to the lyrics?” Namjoon is nearly asleep on Jungkook’s shoulder and just hums in response. Jungkook chuckles and tightens his arms around Namjoon’s waist. “You should be listening. They’re so true.”
Turning his head, Namjoon focuses on the words coming from the speakers as Jungkook sways them ever so lightly.
Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you?
“I don’t need anything more than this,” Jungkook says, honey-coated in words, not wanting to break the comfortable silence. Namjoon pulls back enough to meet his gaze. How does Jungkook always know what he is thinking about?
“Just you. I don’t need fancy clothes or cars; I don’t need more than this apartment and you. But just you.”
Their place gets cold in the winter. The thermostat wouldn’t work often either. The window by their shared plant gallery never really shut properly. It really isn’t a lot at all, but Namjoon didn’t mind it when he first saw it. A bachelor like him hardly needed anything. The elevator is often out of order because the building is old and dingy, somehow holding on to the last piece of its ancient brick and mortar. He liked to take the stairs anyway. But when Jungkook came into his life, he really thought about relocating. He did, but then a smile appeared on Jungkook’s face when he saw his homegrown plants and the little garden that he made for himself on the porch, and he thought maybe they could make this apartment their home.
Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you
For I can't help falling in love with you…
Namjoon shudders and buries his head into Jungkook’s neck again. He feels Jungkook’s lips press against his temple, his cheek, and his hairline. They are soft touches, with Jungkook’s pout, pretty and pink. His mouthing the lyrics makes Namjoon feel a gust of warmth in his heart. Jungkook’s voice is husky. It was beautifully broken, not even a little bit in tune, and oh so perfect. Something Namjoon thinks he can dive deep in.
Namjoon twists his hands in Jungkook’s shirt, trying to get as close as he possibly could. “Really?” he mutters against the column of Jungkook’s throat. He isn’t choked up; he isn’t.
“After all this time? In love?”
“Yup.” Another soft kiss, Jungkook’s breath hot against his forehead. “You and me. We’re fools. Fools in love”
