Work Text:
The colour orange was closing in on Driver. Everything was orange and he could still see the burning helicopter in the water. Driver’s running with Fitzroy and Claire to safety.
That asshole Lloyd was still alive somewhere and Driver didn’t know where Court was. They made it to the car and Driver had gotten the other person that was helping them to drive the car.
The maze was in front of Driver now but the light was obstructing his view. Blinding him. He can see a figure walking closer and out of the maze. It was Court and he was walking towards Driver.
Driver wants to move, to run up to Court but he can’t. He can’t move his legs. Court is in front of him but it's all wrong. He isn’t in the tactical gear, no, he is in his sweats he wears around the house with a plain white t.
Driver looked down and red is spreading rapidly from one spot, staining the shirt. Court looked at him with that gentle smile he would give in the mornings. He looks pale and his face was covered in a sheen of sweat.
Court is now holding his side and the blood is seeping through his fingers. Driver still can’t move, he can’t talk or even scream. Court is just looking at him all softly and sweetly.
“We have matching scars now.” Court says and gives a laugh but he starts to cough up blood.
“I Love you.” is the last thing he says before Court falls on Driver. Finally he can move and he wraps his arms around Court, holding his limp body up.
He shakes Court to get him to wake up, tries to find a pulse but he can’t find one. Driver looks down and there is blood everywhere.
Court's body falls to the ground and Driver's hands are covered in his blood.
Driver gasped awake and sat up. His breathing is fast and he feels his heart pounding inside his chest. He brings his hands up in front of him in a quick jerky motion. His hands trembled as he focused on them and saw that they were clean. They weren’t covered in blood, not in real blood.
Driver turned his head to the side and saw Court sleeping next to him. His face squashed into the pillow. But Driver's mind wasn't fully with him and he flipped Court onto his back.
He quickly climbed on top of the half awake man, fingers touching his neck and his ear to his chest. Driver felt the heartbeat beneath his fingertips and counted the beats he heard. Only then did Driver relax and he let out a long shaky breath.
He didn’t even realise that Court was holding him until he felt fingers in his hair. He was gently playing with the short strands and lightly scratching his scalp.
“Morning Love.” Court's voice was deep from sleep and he gave Driver a squeeze from the arm around him.
Driver breathing was back to normal but he had to make sure Court was fine. He held Court's face in his hands and started to move his head side to side, scanning for any cuts.
Not finding any on his face, Driver moved down to his torso. His hand touched the now silver scar just above his hip. Driver traced his thumb over it a few times to make sure it wouldn’t open and start to bleed.
He kept his eyes on the scar when Court held both of his hands in his own. Driver only looked at him when he felt Court press a kiss on his hand. Driver tried to remove his hands from Courts but he held on.
“They’re dirty.” Driver whispered and tried again to remove his hands. Court gave him a smile, the same smile from his dream. Driver swallowed thickly, trying not to think about it. Court pressed a kiss on each knuckle before he dropped their hands from his lips.
“As much as I love you straddling me in the morning. Seeing if I have a heartbeat is a little concerning.” Court said with a small laugh but his voice was thick with worry.
“You were bleeding. There was so much blood.” Driver said after a long moment and he looked back down to the scar.
The funny thing is, Court did make that joke when they got out of the hospital. He showed the healing wound to Driver and said we have matching scars now, with a stupid smile on his face.
“You didn’t have a heartbeat.” Driver finished looking Court in the eye as he said it. Court in return made a pained expression. He brought one of Driver's hands to rest over his heart.
“Lucky for you, I’m still alive.” Court said and tried to joke.
He always tries to make stupid jokes to lessen Drivers worries but it never did work. Driver kept staring at Court. He could see Court's smile fade and knew he was successful at showing Court he didn’t find it funny.
Court sat up and brought Driver into a hug. “Sorry Honey, just wanted to make you smile.” Court said into Driver's hair.
They sat in silence for what could be hours but the slightly dim room suggested it was still early. Driver had once again started to trace his scar, feeling his own give a small ache of the memory of the knife entering.
“Hope I die first.” Driver said suddenly. He felt Court tense and he started to remove Driver from him to look him in the eye.
“What?” Court asked, searching Driver’s face in shock.
“I hope I’m the one to die first.” Driver repeated, voice not wavering as he stared into Court's eyes. Court was speechless.
“I don’t think I'll be able to live without you Court.” Driver finished saying.
He really doesn’t think he’ll be able to ever live without him anymore. He is simply too in love with the man in front of him. It hurts so much more to think about losing Court than it was getting stabbed in the gut.
“My Love, if you die first. I will follow you quickly into the afterlife.” Court said and brought his hand to Driver's jaw. He leaned in and captured Driver’s lips in an oh so tender kiss.
