Grian growled in response, backing away until his paw nearly fell off the edge of the dumpster. The man slowly reached for the brown bag that was slung over his shoulder. Grian, confused, watched as he fumbled around inside the bag without taking his eyes off of Grian. Apparently, he found what he was looking for and smiled as he slowly pulled the object out and held it in front of him. It was a thin aluminium can, which the man easily and swiftly opened via the pull tab.
Grian recognized the smell instantly.

A few weeks later he meets a very friendly house cat named Sunflower, who suddenly won't leave him or his siblings alone

grian was gasping for breath, inhaling stale air as fast as he could and clutching his chest as if his heart would rip out at any second, claws close to shredding the fabric.
he wouldn't be surprised if it did, honestly. it felt like the world under him was collapsing and every part of his body would be torn limb from limb until he could do nothing but watch.
his whole body was shaking, eyes struggling to focus on any one object in front of him. he could taste blood on his tongue, feel it streaming in his veins. his heartbeat was so loud in his ear he could barely hear anything else.
he was sure he was about to die.

Grian knew a lot of things.
He knew how to cook for a crew of 60 people. He knew how to clean and scrub the deck until his arms went numb. He knew how to avoid being the crew's punching bag for the night. He knew when to shut up and do what he was told.
But most importantly — he knew not to hope.
Because hoping hurts.
So when a battle ends and an unfamiliar man steps into the kitchen, grinning at him like he’s not just another piece of plunder, Grian doesn’t know how to react. Summary
“So… what’s going on? What identity crisis?” Grian asks, taking Mumbo’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. Mumbo deflates just a little, leaning his head back to stare at the ceiling.
“... I…” he pauses. This is one of those things that you can’t really take back— telling someone. He’s not sure, but acknowledging it out loud makes it far more real than longing glances at skirts and Gem’s hair clips. “I think I’m a girl.”
