Actually, There's Something Else...

Summary:

Now in an established relationship after Sunny’s (accidental) confession, the young couple have been spending more time together - their impromptu date at Gino’s diner then triggers a pretty awkward conversation about HEADSPACE’s Aubrey, and what she was actually like in Sunny’s mind.

Notes:

a sneaky, short part two of "there's something i have to tell you" as requested by Imjustasillyguy - this is a nice, more humorous and lighthearted play on the first part where the (slightly awkward) conversation gets brought up again, but sunny can't help but reveal more about the aubrey in HEADSPACE, and how this would transpire.

naturally, this one will be a little shorter as it's more or less a small scenario - perhaps i could make this a series if anybody has any requests for future parts?

as always, thank you for reading!

Work Text:

They had been giggling to themselves for hours - laughing at the cashier who seemed to remember Sunny as “the boy next to that sandwich fiend”, and then who also proceeded to mumble to himself about the morality of ordering a sandwich from a pizza joint (he seemed to feel quite strongly about the subject, so neither of them pressed the matter any further).

Sunny had invited his new girlfriend, Aubrey, out for an impromptu date to Gino’s. Google had told him that in order to fulfill his boyfriend duties, he must take out his girlfriend for a date somewhere nice. Being small, Faraway Town didn’t have many ‘nice’ places, such as fancy restaurants which would eat up a whole lifetime’s worth of Sunny’s pocket money, but it did have the occasional small business which Aubrey was just as fine with - leading him to now.

They were still chuckling slightly, occasionally looking at one another and blushing slightly before doubling over once again to snicker some more. At this moment, Sunny’s world stopped - he began to really look at Aubrey. As the sunset began to leak through the diner’s windows, it caught in her pink hair which was slightly dishevelled - the wind had been brutal on the walk there, and Sunny wondered if his was just the same.

She was gorgeous

Aubrey’s character, he thought, is so authentic - the way she can laugh without bother, the way she can talk to him and ease all of his worries… She was truly one of the greatest things that had happened to him.

“Hey, Sunny…” She began, suddenly ceasing her laughter and staring up at him with a newfound seriousness which slightly caught him off guard.

“Yeah?”

“I know we haven’t really spoken about it since then, but I’d like to ask… what was I like in that ‘HEADSPACE’ of yours?’

Although still a tough topic for him, he felt so at ease with Aubrey; as if anything he said she’d understand. Not even as if - he knows she will understand him no matter what. And so Sunny began to talk - the adventures, the quarrels between her and Kel, the picnics…

The way she was so protective and affectionate, that it warmed Sunny’s heart in a time where all he could see was darkness…

“What?” Aubrey shot up. “Hang on, go back to that. Rewind.”

“Wha-what part?”

“Protective? Affectionate? Did you subconsciously imagine me as having a massive crush on you, or something?”

“Huh?! No… that’s not what I said at all!”

“So you didn’t want me to have a crush on you…?”

“Th-that’s also just not what I said, though…”

“It totally is! D’you wanna break up with me or something? It’s only been, like, a month, Sunny! Jeez!”

Sunny had observed that she was joking, and wondered if this is what it’s like to have a girlfriend. Would he be subjected to a lifetime of being gaslighted into believing he said something he didn’t?

Perhaps he didn’t mind.

“Hey, hey! Just admit you’ve totally had a big fat crush on me for years. I’m your girlfriend, why does it matter?”

“Aubrey… everyone’s looking… the entire town will think I’m weird…”

“So be it! Be loud and proud! You were hoping I’d like you in real life, anyways.”

“I mean… yeah…”

Despite knowing she was messing with him, Sunny couldn’t help but feel overwhelmingly embarrassed; by now the entire town probably knew about his extensive crush on Aubrey, which made his ears turn red like cherries. But, to him, he was right where he wanted to be.

It was really a dream come true.
