Work Text:
Pencil sat inside of the Freesmart supervan, legs propped up on the dashboard. The orange and red rays of sun peeked into the van as it sank below the horizon line. It was a long day, and.. Ugh, Freesmart was up for elimination! How could this have happened-?
“Pencil?” Pencil heard the familiar voice of Book as she hopped into the Freesmart van from the back.
“Huh? Oh, hi Book..” Pencil replied as Book sat down in the driver's seat of the Supervan. Book looked over at the sunset and her eyes widened in surprise
“I… just wanted to stop by and see how you were doing. Sorry about the challenge and- o-oh wow! The sunset’s pretty.”
Pencil chuckled in response
“Mhm.. the challenge was... fine, I suppose” Pencil grumbled, replying to what Book was starting to say before she got distracted. "And, yeah, the sunset's pretty too. I come here every day to just watch it."
Silence fell after that, some may have found it uncomfortable, but for them? They were both content with the silence.
Book looked over at Pencil, watching her expression. She found her face heat up a little at Pencils features, they way her eyelids looked slightly heavy, the soft smile she had on her face from the beauty of the sunset.
“..You remind me of the sunset” Book mentioned absentmindedly
Pencil’s heart skipped a beat, her breath hitching. What? She sat upright in the car seat, looking at Book whose face was heating up by the second as she realized what she just said
“What did you-?”
“N-NOTHING.. I-I.. what I said… I-I had said-” Book yelped.
Pencil just burst out laughing at the stuttering mess Book had suddenly become, and Book felt like she was melting at Pencils voice. It was almost soft, in a way, the way the back of Pencils hand nearly brushed her lips as she giggled. It reminded Book of a childlike laughter.
“Well jeez Book, no need to flatter me like that” Pencil giggled. Book shook her head.
“Ah, y-yeah..” She muttered, her eyes remaining on Pencil's face as Pencil looked back out at the sunset. Book did too, eventually. She let out a shaky breath, trying to even out her breathing and calm herself down.
It was, in fact, very hard to calm down unfortunately.
Her mind kept racing as she panicked internally. Pencil took what she said in a platonic way right? She hadn’t meant it like that! Book glanced over at Pencil again, and almost immediately her stomach twisted… not in a bad way, but almost in that ‘stomach butterflies’ type of way. She placed a hand on her chest and could feel her heart pounding underneath.
What was this feeling? It was unfamiliar to Book to say the least, maybe she could find a definition of a feeling that matches what she’s feeling right now sometime later…
Pencil was feeling no different.
She cupped one of her hands close to her chest, her mind racing with thoughts similar to Books. Did she actually mean it like that? Does she.. Like like me? She was so cute stuttering like that… Pencil’s heart already felt like it was doing flips inside of her, but she glanced at Book anyways. Book sat there all peacefully, a hand over her chest, face slightly tinted pink. Pencil looked away, back at the sunset. Her heart was screaming at her by now, pounding so hard it felt like it would rip out of her chest.
Pencil hesitantly looked over at Book again, and looked down at her hand. Slowly, Pencil gently laid her hand over Books, averting her gaze intentionally to look at the sunset. Book felt Pencils hand lay over her own, she looked down at their hands in surprise. Another shaky breath escaped Book as she gently interlocked their hands together.
Pencil looked back at Book, who was looking at their intertwined hands. Book felt Pencils gaze on her so she looked up. Their eyes met each others, Book blushing fiercely, Pencil just smiled.
“...You know, you also look like a sunset, Book.” Pencil commented. Book let out a tiny squeak and buried her face in her free hand. Pencil chuckled and leaned over towards Book, grabbing Book's wrist in her hand and moving Book’s hand away from her face.
“Cmon Book! Don’t hide from me..” Pencil laughed softly, taking the moment to admire Book’s face and the way it was a blushing mess.
“... I-I-”
“Hey, Book..." Pencil’s grip loosened on Book’s wrist as she spoke up. Her voice was a bit hesitant ".. do you... like me? Book blinked.
“Well of course I do! You’re the leader of Freesmart and-”
“No.. I mean, do you like like me..?”
Book froze. Could that be what Book was feeling? Love? Well she had never experienced it before so it could definitely be a real possibility..
“..I-I mean.. Well… I.. don’t… know?” Book stuttered out, her heart pounding in her chest again. Pencil took her hand away from Book’s hand, the one that was intertwined, and placed it on Book's chest, feeling the rhythm of her heart beat beneath her palm.
“Your heart’s beating fast” Pencil stated. Book blinked.
“M-maybe I do…” Book admitted, her voice a whisper, and Pencil’s smile widened hearing that.
“Then you wouldn’t mind this..” Pencil said. Book was confused at first, just staring at Pencil as she slowly leaned forward… however she quickly understood what she meant right before Pencil leaned forward completely and pressed her lips against Books. Book didn’t pull away, instead, she leaned into it. Her heart was fluttering in her chest, and so was Pencil’s. They both felt those strange tingles in their stomach as they pulled away from the kiss, taking a breath of air before diving back into it.
Book’s eyes fluttered closed as she felt Pencil push her against the car seat, her body melting as she felt the warmth of Pencil’s body. Pencil slowly lifted her hand, gently brushing against Book’s pages, finding its way between two of them. Book leaned into the touch, a shaky breath escaping her as Pencil pulled away for a second breath of air.
Pencil intertwined a hand with Books again, lifting it to press it against the car seat next to Books head. She leaned in and kissed her forehead, trailing the kisses down her face back to her lips where they continued.
Book was a mess internally, her mind was fuzzy in the best way possible, face warm, stomach tingly. She was a jumble of weird feelings, her heart doing weird things inside her chest as she felt Pencils hand squeeze her own.
They broke the kiss for the final time, both catching their breath as they let the moment sink in. Pencil blinked her eyes open first, looking back at the sunset, the sun almost disappeared completely.
“..We should… head back to our other Freesmarters.” Pencil suggested, Book opened her eyes as well and noticed how late it had gotten.
“Probably for the best…” Book muttered out, disappointment evident in her voice. Pencil let out that same chuckle that made Book’s heart jump.
“Same time tomorrow?” She asked.
“...o-of course!”
