Katsuki rips open cabinets and slams down the things he needs to make the best damn cupcakes onto his counter while Eijirou watches with a wide grin. He has to reach into the far back of one, rarely used cabinet for a cupcake tin. Katsuki keeps cursing Eijirou out for saying they’ll bring homemade cupcakes to a meetup with friends without asking and Sato out after Eijirou claimed his strawberry matcha cupcakes were the tastiest he’s ever had.
After arranging everything he needs, he yells at Eijirou for standing around, taking up valuable kitchen space. He rattles off things his boyfriend can handle. Eijirou listens to every demand. He turns the oven on to proper temp while Katsuki creams butter and sugar together. When Katsuki cracks the eggs and separates the yolks and egg whites, Eijirou measures the dry ingredients. He weighs flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and matcha powder, and he sifts them into a separate bowl. Katsuki quickly mixes the rest of the wet ingredients together.
Then, they work together to complete the batter. Eijirou dumps dry mixture into Katsuki’s bowl until he yells at him to stop. They alternate between adding dry ingredients and milk until everything thickens up into a smooth, velvety concoction. Eijirou chooses the, in his words, cutest cupcake liners they have–gears and explosions dot the sides–and plops them down into every divot, double-checking there are no liners stuck together. Where he found them Katsuki has no idea, but they’ll work. Katsuki pours the batter in evenly. Eijirou wipes away any drips of batter outside the liners.
The oven beeps, just in time, and Katsuki shoves it in for twenty minutes. He delegates Eijirou to dish duty as he starts up the icing and decorations. Grabbing half of the strawberries, Katsuki chops the stems off and blends them before pouring the puree into a pan. He reduces them down and sets it aside to cool.
Unfortunately, Eijirou washes the dishes in record time and comes to help out. Katsuki grumbles a bit, already prepared for Eijirou’s “help” by doubling the frosting recipe. He mixes cream cheese, butter, and the strawberry reduction together while side-eyeing an excited Eijirou. He orders Eijirou to add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, because he might as well actually help out. Katsuki whips it all up, and Eijirou is finally able to oh so graciously taste-test the frosting. He whacks his boyfriend on the back of his head when he tries to dip his fingers in for a taste and again when he tries to double dip the spoon he grabbed.
The timer screeches, and Eijirou pulls the cupcakes out to cool. Katsuki scoops as much of the frosting into a piping bag as he can before Eijirou returns to help out some more. Katsuki pulls the rest of the strawberries out of the fridge while Eijirou beelines to the half-empty bowl to demolish the rest. He also sneaks a couple of strawberries away from Katsuki, who carves them up into flowers for decoration.
By the time all that is done, the cupcakes are cool enough to frost. Eijirou insists on piping them. Katsuki lets him. They’ll be mostly covered by strawberry flowers anyway. Katsuki places the last touches on them and chucks them in a container for tomorrow. He takes two to replenish energy and smirks at Eijirou’s protests. Katsuki downs the first and opens his mouth, pretending to eat the second cupcake. He laughs meanly at his boyfriend’s dejected face before handing it over. His smirk softens to a satisfied smile at Eijirou’s muffled exclamations of how amazing they are as he stuffs his face. Maybe he should bake for Eijirou more often.
