Chapter Text
The first time was truly an accident. To be fair he had only heard Jan Maas speak English up untill this point so when he did hear him speak Dutch it came as quite a shock. With him being the only Dutch player and everyone else speaking English it did make sense for him to only speak in English, except he wasn’t. If he were Ted he’d have already brought up the fact that he himself could speak Dutch, for bonding reasons and making a new player feel at home and what not. But he wasn’t, he was however extremely curious what the Dutch man was speaking so passionately about. Sadly he couldn’t hear the other end of the conversation without making it seem too obvious. If only he could stand a little bit closer…
(“I can’t stand it anymore everyone is so indirect but in a weird way, like they don’t want to hurt my feelings.”)
(Yes exactly, I never know where I stand with people. It’s so frustrating.”)
(“I can’t say anything directly because then somebody will get mad at me, even though I answered their questions normally they still look at me like I called their mom a whore or something…”)
(“No I didn’t call anyones mother a whore. I would never do such a thing…”)
(“Well except that one time, but I really don’t understand them anymore, it’s no use trying I think.”)
(The food? I don’t even want to talk about the food…”)
(“I love tea, but who drinks tea with milk. Who would come up with something so stupid?”)
(“Yes it really is that gross! In my first meeting with the manager she offered me some tea, I thought it would be nice, how could I know there would be milk in there. I almost spat it out like coach Lasso.”)
(“No I couldn’t finish it, I threw it in a planter when she had to leave the room. I’m pretty sure the plant died, I do feel a little guilty about it.”)
(The worst thing! I can’t even bike to practice or the grocery store, I mean I could… Only if i want to get hit by a red double-decker.”
(“Yeah you’re probably right, I’ll get used to it. I just miss home.”)
(“The team is fine though, everyone is pretty is chill.”)
(“Well actually there is this one attractive guy, it’s a shame he’s French though. I can’t say any names ‘cause I’m in the dressing room, but that’s something positive about England at least.”)
(“Yes I also have to go, the break is almost over.”)
“Doei!
(“Bye! We’ll talk soon, give my regards to everyone at home.”)
“You okay there coach? You look like you just figured out you can’t make a baby via ejaculation in a hot tub then finding out your best bud is really the father and then finding out the birthmother of your girlfriend is gonna adopt the kid.”
“Was that a Glee reference..?”
“Yeah I always did love show choir, nothing ironic about that. But questionable producer choices and great covers aside. Are you really okay?”
“Yeah no… I yeah I just- I learned a lot about somebody I knew nothing about.”
“Well that’s beautiful coach. Gosh darn, now I have the instrumentals to Don’t Stop Believin’ stuck in my head.”
