Summary
“You know, when Wayne Gretzky was a kid he had to move away from home,” said Theriault. “He was too good. The other kids’ parents kept booin’ him at his games. He must have been a lonely guy.” He nodded at the team, still fumbling their way through the basic drill. “Those guys have each other. They’ll go home, or maybe out to a bar, and complain about their captain with the stick up his ass. And next game, they’ll play together, side-by-side.”
“I’m by their side,” Shane protested.
Theriault shook his head. “You’re not, Hollander. You’re flying ahead, leaving them in your dust. I’m just sayin’ it’s a lonely world at the top. Don’t be discouraged if they’re never at your level. No one is.”
He stood up to walk away, removing his hand from Shane’s shoulder. They exchanged a nod and he walked off. Before he was completely gone, however, he called over his shoulder—
“Except Rozanov, of course!” Shane’s heart leapt to his throat. “Not that he’s ever gonna give you much company.”
