Work Text:

The pomp and the councils and the feasting were long over by the time Jaime managed to get his brother alone. It was late in the night when he found Tyrion in the room he’d hastily set up as his office–contemplatively drinking a glass of something that smelled stronger than wine.

“Well?” Jaime asked.

Tyrion sighed, “Is the dragon queen going back to Essos not good enough for you?”

“Not if she’s taking you with her! We could have beaten her!”

“Yes,” said Tyrion, “After she’d burned half the crownlands and sent Westeros into years of privation.”

Jaime huffed. “And how do we know she won’t come back!”

“Well,” said Tyrion dryly, “Think on the bright side. If she does come back, she might bring me with her!”

“I’m not joking,” said Jaime moodily, “And you’re taking this lightly for someone who's being sent to the other side of the world as a bargaining chip.”

“I’m going to be her advisor, not her hostage!” said Tyrion, sounding a little offended. And then, more gravely, he said, “And it’s the only way I’ll get out from under Father’s thumb. You know that.”

Jaime wanted to disagree, but he couldn’t. So instead he said, “And why is she going home anyways, after all the trouble to get here. She has no business thinking she could lose. She has three dragons!”

Tyrion snorted, “As if a single day with Robb at the strategy table wasn’t enough to convince you of our own chances.” He continued, “Anyways, it seems, unlike her father, she doesn’t actually relish burning countless of her own people alive to win the Iron Throne. It’s a good thing she didn’t meet Joffrey, or she might have decided she had a different duty to the people of Westeros.”

Tyrion stopped and looked at Jaime, “That’s another thing. We have to make Father stop the assassination attempts.”

“What?” Jaime asked, now with rather more alarm.

“Oh don’t worry,” Tyrion said with a sigh, “Your northern king is safe. But if Father keeps trying to kill Daenerys, eventually he’ll get close enough for her to notice, and that seems like the sort of thing she’d take offense to. You are right in one way. Let’s not find out how much provocation it takes for her to come back.”

“He tried and failed?” Jaime asked, not addressing your northern king.

Tyrion grimaced, “Robb Stark got word of it somehow. But the people Father hired will try again, unless we get him to call them off.”

More thoughtfully he continued, “Thankfully, Daenerys herself has been a bit distracted. Maybe I’ve been too hard on you given how receptive Daenerys was to Robb Stark’s…charms.”

Jaime made a noise of mortification and then found a hasty retreat.
