“Apo, Apo, you're here! Oh my god, you're here, I thought- I thought I was going to be alone forever,” Pyro gasps, scrabbling like a rat in the cell across from her. Oh, has he been stuck here waiting for her? Oops.
“I’m here, dude,” she returns. “Shared afterlife, you’re stuck with me. We got some issues to work through, apparently.”
He looks awful, pressed against the bars of his own cell to get closer to her. His clothes were never clean, but when they’d lived together he’d taken care of them. Now, blood and grave-dirt stain them. The pitted scarring across his face from holy water is a stark contrast to her own; smooth and perfect throughout everything she’s ever endured.
Jealousy won’t fix anything.

A figure stoops over the corpse of a pig, tearing bloody handfuls of meat and shoving them down its greedy gullet. Pyro steps forward; a twig snaps. It startles and lurches upright to face him.
“You want to talk?” Apo—murderer, traitor, Truffle was good and sweet and kind—offers.
“I don’t think we have anything to talk about,” he says. Apo’s mouth ticks down at the corners, but she doesn’t look surprised.
“You wanna dance, then?” she asks, and flexes her claws.

Summary
The blood moon rises over Scott's castle. Chickens cease their endless clucking, hopping onto perches to sleep and hope they aren't the next ones taken. Cow bones lie abandoned along the courtyard, discarded along with the bloodless husks of their owners. Bats flutter away into the woods in search of insects to eat. All the living things in the old Goldsmith Castle are there by force.
Apo is a dead thing in the dark dreaming she's alive, and has nothing in common with them.
She has a lot in common with Pyro, though. At the beginning, back before she made a devil's deal, they'd bonded over finding Truffle. That had been a beautiful time, a time when Apo had begun to think this might not be so bad. A time when her biggest problem was that her supposedly abandoned outpost would have tourists in it who wouldn’t shut the fuck up about vampires and Bigfoot, and she could send letters to Cherri without lying. A time when she could stand to send letters to Cherri at all.

So it cuts all the deeper, when Steve recognizes strength, precision, endurance, capacity: sees the pieces of himself not born but made, reflected in this body, this person, this weapon: the Winter Soldier.
It slices through Steve’s soul when he returns the Soldier's gaze, and reads the only thing that lives in the deadness that pervades behind those irises in the night.
It’s not You can’t beat me.
It’s more You can’t stop them.
For the prompt: The AU where Steve Rogers sees the best in everyone, and it is that quality that brings him back the person he loves most in the world; where Steve reaches out to help the Winter Soldier on principle, but when the muzzle-mask comes off, he finds Bucky Barnes.
