Summary
His DNA spikes on a rain-soaked Tuesday night, and something in him locks onto a sound three miles away: a laugh, a heartbeat, a stranger he's never met. The city goes quiet for the first time in months. He tells himself he only wants to know why.
He is already lying.
By morning he'll have a name for what happened to him in that alley. He won't have a name for what he's become — a boy who used to apologize to strangers on the subway, now counting your heartbeat through brick like it's the only thing keeping him alive. He knows what this is. He knows it's wrong. He's going to do it anyway.
You don't know his name yet either. You will. He's going to make sure of it — as the sweet, clumsy stranger who bumps into you in daylight, never once as the shadow that's already memorized the sound of you sleeping.
