One of the best sure-fire ways to get the legendary Frieren the mage to visit a town or save a city from destruction is when word gets out that someone is offering up a prized relic as a reward. Be it a grimoire, a magical amulet, an obscure spell for something as mundane as always ensuring your laces tie tightly on your shoes the first time, no relic was too small or too insignificant for the elf of legends. If Frieren heard tale or rumor of the object being offered, she would often re-route their entire current trajectory just to either catch a glimpse of said relic or to complete whatever task it takes to ensure it ends up in her possession. Her companions, on the other hand, are not nearly as amused at this particular quirk their mistress has cultivated in her thousand years walking this Earth.
“Mistress Frieren, we’re going to miss the ferry if you delay us much longer in your quest,” Fern gently chastises, her purple eyes drooping with defeat, knowing there is no reasoning with her teacher when she gets worked up over a relic. “Remember, it only runs once a month, so we’ll be stranded in this town for that long, cutting heavily into our snack budget in favor of renting our rooms at the inn,” the younger mage continues to remind, using her magic to clear aside a path between the thorny bracken for herself and Stark to pass through.
“You both seem to like this little town,” Frieren lackadaisically responds, her striking green gaze landing on the creature of interest in the near distance.
“It is a nice town, Frieren, but I have to agree with Fern on this one,” Stark speaks up, brandishing his axe at the sight of wolves closing in from the trio’s left flank. “We’d rather not be delayed another month if we can help it,” he grunts out, slamming the blade of his axe into a wolf’s jaw right as it prepares to leap at Fern.
“And here I thought you’d both appreciate being delayed. It would give you a chance to have another date,” Frieren smirks into the bushes, snagging the Wolpertinger she was after in one fell swoop.
In the same breath, Fern’s magic flashes and sends three more wolves fleeing. She and Stark lock eyes with one another now that their safety has been restored, slight blushes appearing on both faces.
“Mistress, you overstep,” Fern harrumphs, her signature pout appearing on her lips.
“Knock if off, Frieren,” Stark pleads, rubbing a hand across his neck.
“Come now, or we’ll miss the ferry,” Frieren calls, a few paces ahead of her apprentices as they trek back through the woods to claim their reward.
“What was so important that we barely managed to catch the ferry on time?”
“I’m glad you asked, Fern,” Frieren smiles wickedly, placing a small ring on her left hand. “This ring turns me invisible!”
Only her body vanishes. Her clothes float.
