Work Text:
Froggy walks along the sidewalk, humming under his breath. He thankfully didn't need to bother with hiding himself, since it's currently in the middle of the night.
The weather has been terrible lately. This last few days have been extremely dry and the sun has truly not given any mercy - going outside is an arduous task.
These conditions sadly made Froggy not have the energy to get out of his house and eat. But this wasn't the real problem.
The actual problem was that he just couldn't stop crying. Well, not actually crying. But he doesn't really care about semantics.
Frogs have glands that produce a fluid to keep their eyes hydrated. And Froggy, well, is a frog. It's in his name.
Although it is a natural part of his biology that he is already accustomed with, it normally isn't this bad. The tears have been clouding his vision, and Froggy does not feel like hunting a person while he can't see them.
But that's fine, because he's got a solution: Grox!
While Froggy was complaining over a phone call about the weather, Grox said he had some raw meat left over in the fridge. It's not human meat, but that's… fine. He truly doesn't understand how someone could find eating people gross. They are just close-minded!
So, they agreed to meet up in a secluded park. Not in Grox's house, because he's a coward, apparently.
(Froggy did not bother to tell Grox that he almost definitely knows where he lives, and is just waiting for the opportunity to break in.)
After rubbing his eyes for the millionth time, he finally arrives at the park. He quickly follows Grox's smell, and finds him sitting on a bench, holding a small container with meat. Yay!
"Grox! Hello!" Froggy exclaims, waving his hand. The only reason he didn't just pounce on him is because he recognized the shape of a gun by his side. And he did not come outside his house today to get the police called because someone somehow heard a gunshot.
"What's up, frogm-" Grox begins before pausing, staring at him with wide eyes (but not actually, since he's a skeleton. But that's how Froggy imagines it would be if he had them!), "Froggy..?"
Froggy ignores the concerned look and sits down beside him, snatching the container from his hands and inspecting it. Inside of it were different pig cuts, all of which seemed pretty expensive. Wow.
"Damn, you have pig liver in here? I thought you hated this stuff!"
"Uh.. well.."
With no need for dinner etiquette, Froggy started eating.
It would never compare to human flesh, of course, but he honestly could have been eating straight up bricks right now and he would find them delicious. That's what happens when you don't eat for a few days. Isn't there a saying about this? Hunger is the best sauce or something? Yeah, it probably is.
Froggy then realized that Grox was not saying anything. Not even complaining about how disgusting it was to eat raw meat. He glanced to the side and the guy seemed mortified, for the lack of a better word.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Froggy asked, still with his mouth full. He tried to think of reasons the other would look at him like that. He didn't get out of his house for a few days, so he probably looked worse for wear… But they had definitely seen each other in way worse circumstances. Like the one time he jumped in a lava pool! He should do that again, it was fun.
Grox, looking extremely conflicted for some reason, settled for awkwardly putting his hand on Froggy's shoulder and grimacing before turning his head away. Damn, did he smell bad or something?
Shrugging, Froggy continued to eat. After all, he had to follow his list of priorities.
…
It's not really a list, since there's only one item in it. But his top priority was always to eat! He does not want to find out what would happen if he got way too hungry. Actually, he already knows, because it happened the first time he became rabid. He just ate a whole village. (Insane stuff, he has no idea how he was able to handle eating more than fifteen people in a few hours.)
Froggy finished the meal quite quickly, standing up with a satisfied sigh. He gave the container back to Grox and walked over to a nearby lake to clean his hands. He won't lie, this park was pretty decent.
On the edge of the lake stood a small frog, staring at him. Its eyes were full of tears, just like his. What a sad (dry) day for frogkind, they really can't win.
He cleaned his hands on the lake and looked as the blood was washed away by the stream. Very cool.
After a bit of small talk with the frog, and by that he means croaking at each other for a few seconds, he walked back to the bench. He decided to stand still directly in front of Grox, who was just… sitting there. Looking like he regretted all of his life decisions.
"Okay. Why do you keep looking at me like that? Do I smell bad?" Froggy asked, again, because it was getting kind of weird. Not only did he barely speak to him the whole time, he had the same expression a sopping wet cat would make. Was he getting sick? Could he even get sick? He is a skeleton.. but, to be honest, Froggy doesn't really doubt that they could somehow contract an illness.
Grox glanced at his phone, which was in a… Wikihow page? What the hell?
"Uhh… What can I," he looked at his phone again. "What can I do to help?"
Huh? "Huh?"
Wordlessly, Froggy walked over to look at the screen of his phone.
'How to comfort someone who's crying or upset', 'What to do when someone is crying'
Ooooh. Makes sense.
Froggy can't help but feel ecstatic. Despite being the worse attempt at comfort he's ever seen, coming from Grox, this is probably the highest honor you can get. The equivalent of this to a normal person would be like.. if someone you just met bought multiple mansions for you.
Froggy started giggling, which quickly turned into a full blown laugh. (It's super scary. He laughs like he just murdered a family of four and escaped the police.)
Grox, on the other hand, looks very embarrassed.
"Dude, stop laughing at me! I am doing my best here, okay!?" he groaned, putting his head in his hands.
Still laughing, Froggy tackled Grox to the ground, who yelped.
He would probably have said 'ayo chill' or something if he wasn't so confused. Because, to him, Froggy is still crying. But also laughing hysterically? He must think he's crazy. Not that he isn't crazy, but still.
"It's a frog thing! I'm not crying!" Froggy says, weirdly happy, as he held Grox down and kind of started to huddle? Cuddle? with him. For the simple reason of having free will. Even if it was not pleasant at all. No matter what the media may tell you, lying down on the grass it's not comfortable or romantic. It just hurts your back.
"What do you mean you're not crying?! You literally are!" Grox says in return, attempting to free himself from his grasp.
Then, a tear fell down on Grox's face. It has a texture that feels like if you mixed a bit normal water with that weird thick type of water. Overall, not how a human tear is supposed to be. Which Grox seems to have realized, going by the blank look on his face. Once again regretting every single thing he has done in his life so far.
Froggy takes the opportunity to properly hug him, nuzzling his face in the other's neck. Who can blame him for doing that and being happy, really? Grox is not exactly known for his empathy. Making him even feel the need to look up how to comfort someone is an absolutely absurd feat.
But him actually looking it up? And actually saying something?
Insane.
Grox is motionless beneath him, having already resigned to his fate. Nevertheless, still very embarrassed.
"If you ever speak of this again I am going to kill you."
"Sure."
