Chapter Text
It started with a mistake.
Yoimiya wasn’t even supposed to be in that chat.
She’d downloaded the app because a customer mentioned it—some kind of “late-night voice lounge” where strangers joined themed rooms and talked about random topics. Yoimiya figured it might be fun, something new to break up her routine at the shop.
But instead of joining the “Festival Planning” room like she intended, she tapped the wrong one.
“Quiet Hours – No Chaos, Just Calm.”
“…Oops.”
She almost backed out immediately.
Almost.
Inside, only a handful of people were talking. Their voices were low, measured. No one was interrupting. No one was laughing too loudly. It felt… strange. Not bad. Just unfamiliar.
Yoimiya hovered silently for a minute, listening.
“I think people misunderstand silence,” one voice said. “They treat it like emptiness, when it’s more like space.”
Yoimiya paused.
The voice was soft—gentle, but clear. It didn’t demand attention, but it held it anyway.
Someone else responded, but she barely registered it.
Her finger moved before she could overthink it.
She unmuted.
“Okay, but like—space can still feel lonely, right?”
There was a brief pause.
Then the same voice answered her.
“Yes. But it depends on who you’re sharing it with.”
Yoimiya blinked.
“Oh. …Oh, that’s good.”
A few people chuckled quietly. The conversation continued, but something had shifted—at least for her.
She glanced at the username of the speaker.
kz_wind
Huh.
For the rest of the session, she stayed.
And for once—
Yoimiya didn’t feel the need to fill every silence.
She returned the next night.
And the night after that.
At first, she told herself it was just because the room was calming. A nice change of pace.
But she started noticing patterns.
kz_wind always joined around the same time.
He didn’t speak often—but when he did, people listened.
And eventually—
He started speaking to her more directly.
“You seem more comfortable with silence today,” he said one night.
Yoimiya leaned back in her chair, smiling.
“Hey, I can be calm when I want to be!”
“I don’t doubt that,” he replied. “But you sound like someone who prefers movement.”
“…Is it that obvious?”
“A little.”
She laughed, quieter than usual.
“Maybe I just like talking to people.”
“That’s not a bad thing.”
There was a pause.
Then she asked, “What about you? You barely talk.”
“I prefer to listen first.”
“…And then?”
“Then I decide if I have something worth saying.”
Yoimiya tilted her head, even though he couldn’t see it.
“…You always do, though.”
Silence.
Not empty.
Just… full.
That was the first night they stayed after the room emptied out.
Just the two of them.
Talking.
