A man’s voice, even, rehearsed-sounding the way voices got when someone had said a thing to enough people that it had worn a groove.

He said true things into it the way other people breathed, because the truth to Shane was more important than how it could be used against him.

None of it cost him anything to say. The sentences arrived fully formed and sanded smooth, smiling and shaking his hand at the door. At some point saying the correct thing out loud had stopped requiring him to believe it.

Shane shifted, folded his arms at his chest, starting to fold. Ilya stared at him, unyielding. He was a stone. He was turned to stone. And his words could make the past what he wanted it to be, he had that power. The world was only what you shaped it.

It wasn’t about answers. It was about waiting for someone to say the wrong nine words on tape and turning that into three days of content. He knew how to give them nothing.
