Chapter 1: The First Meeting

Chapter Text

It was one of those days that people put on post cards, the sunset was spilling over the sea like oil, the salty air tasted like a sort of freedom people have been searching for but can never quite grasp and even the wind wouldn’t dare break the tranquility of the small town. Not that Wifies cared he smelled of coffee and sweat and just wanted to go home take a shower and study, he’s never been sure why romance books make dudes who smell like that seem attractive he smells like shit. There’s only a few locals dotted about chatting silently with each other or perhaps soaking up the last of the sun, Wifies loved it when it was like this just an hour left on his shift and nothing but peace and quiet-

The door flew open quickly as a man flew in nearly falling flat on his face colourful glasses falling off his face. The door fell closed behind him but the man made no move to go pick them up, just stood there gazing at Wifies. ‘Hello,’ Wifies gave the man an awkward little wave ‘welcome to Sea Breeze Coffee what would you like to order?’ The sudden movement seems to spur the man into action as he clumsily bends down to grab his glasses nearly dropping them once again before ambling to the counter. ‘Oh um can I have,’ the man pauses to glance at the menu before fixing his glasses on his face and continuing ‘could I have a decaf half shot iced vanilla latte please.’ The man smiles at Wifies but the look in his eyes makes it seem like he thinks the boys going to jump over the counter and beat the shit out of him for his order, which at that point is basically just flavoured milk. Wifies takes a moment to write down the order before nodding at him. ‘Yup that’s alright, that will be $5, would you like that for sit in or take away?’ Wifies smiles in what he hopes is a reassuring way but he’s been told he’s not the greatest at social interaction ever so who knows. ‘Oh yeah could I- can I have that to take away please thank you.’ The man gets redder by the second as he stumbles through his sentence before passing Wifies $5. Wifies turns his back on the man to start preparing his slightly caffeinated milk glaring down the jar of decaf coffee as if it was his mortal enemy while it was. ‘So what brings you around here I’ve never seen you before?’ Wifies asks while scooping up the ice before he pours in the milk. ‘Oh me I’m a marine biology student, you know you guys are kind of known for you know,’ The man cuts himself off with a sheepish smile. ‘Oh what the sea monsters that apparently haunt our waters?’ Wifies teases as he squeezes vanilla syrup into the decaf caffeine and gives in a little shake before putting it in the milk. ‘What do you not believe in them?’ The man’s eyes go wide at Wifies joking way of talking about them as if the idea of Wifies not believing was ridiculous. ‘No I do not I’ve yet to see any proof of them and I wouldn’t talk about them so freely most of the locals don’t take kindly to it,’ Wifies says glancing around the room to see a couple of the people side eyeing their conversation ‘now order for?’

‘Order for Hummer and I’m going to prove to you they’re real!’ The man- Hummer apparently said with conviction.
‘Well Hummer my name is Wifies and I’m always excited to be proved wrong so I look forward to it.’ Wifies responded with an indulgent smile before Hummer left the cafe with a more determined stride than the mess of a man who fell in here not five minutes ago.
