Chapter 1: Two sides, Same coin

Chapter Text

It had been three weeks since she had gone missing. Ron had been throwing himself into work ever since the day she was declared missing. He wasn’t even sure why exactly; he just needed something to help him cope. He had been sitting at his desk, going over paperwork after paperwork for over 12 hours, way longer than his original shift was.

He stopped writing, glancing over at the clock. It was 9:03 PM. He should probably get home unless he wanted to pull another all-nighter. He lifted his arm, sniffing his underarm before quickly pulling his face away. Yeah, he needed to go home.

He let out a sigh, standing up. He didn’t even understand why he was acting this way. He usually always took pride in having good hygiene and would never usually take more hours than he needed to at work. Doing that just caused his migraines to act up more. His migraines—they truly had been getting more frequent over the past couple of weeks. He often went to the hospital to get them treated, but he hadn’t been there in a while.

“Maybe I’ll go tomorrow..” He thought to himself as he grabbed his coat and his keys. He put on his coat, zipping it up—after all, it was winter, and he did smell—before leaving the office and locking it behind him.

It had been a month since he quit his job at Animal Corporation, three weeks since she went missing, two weeks since Ratthew lost their shared apartment, and two weeks of living on the streets during peak winter. Ratthew sighed shakily, shivering as he pulled his knees close to him, his pink tail wrapping around himself. Tonight, it was colder than usual, -5°C to be exact. He was starting to think he wasn’t going to be able to sleep tonight.

He reluctantly rested his head on the cold concrete, staring up at the sky. He missed her dearly. His twin sister, Rattina. She worked for the Animal Corporation before she had gone missing. He knew that they had something to do with her disappearance. After all, that must be the reason why they were after him now.

He surprisingly hadn’t gotten caught yet, despite going to the hospital that the corporation owned so often. Actually, the corporation owned almost everything in the town. He always found that so sketchy, especially since those... anomalies started popping up more and more as Animal Corporation took over the town.

That’s the reason why he quit, and he begged his sister to quit too. But she didn’t. She wanted to research herself into what they were actually doing. Suddenly, now she’s missing.

“Don’t worry, Rattina.. I’ll expose that damned corporation for you. I won’t let them get me..” He spoke quietly to himself, closing his eyes as he tried to sleep.

Ron had finally made it home. It was now 9:22 PM. He locked the door behind him, putting up his keys and coat. His apartment wasn’t particularly big, but it wasn’t small either. It had a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and a bedroom. The house wasn’t decorated much, a few fake plants covering some empty corners, along with some pictures of family hung up on the wall.

But there was one photo he couldn’t help but stare at. A picture of him, Rattina, and her brother all at the fair together. The corporation had given out free tickets to everyone who worked in the office building that year.

That’s right, he had just remembered when he looked at that photo. Rattina had a brother, Ratthew. They never really got along well. After all, Ron found him annoying, as Ratthew constantly teased him and called him a “nerd.” But when Rattina was around, he would suck it up. They both would suck up their rivalry with each other for her.

“.. I wonder how he’s doing.”

He spoke out loud to himself, curious. He knew how close those two were. Rattina often spoke about Ratthew to him. That caring nature of hers is what drew him to Rattina in the first place. She always used to say how sweet and caring Ratthew was too. He always questioned how true that was because every time he was alone with him, he acted the exact opposite.

He then suddenly snapped out of his thoughts, feeling his eyes begin to water, his bunny ears flattened against his head.

“.. I should stop thinking about that stuff. I was going to go take a shower.. Then go to bed.”

He said to himself before leaving the living room, going into his bedroom to gather his pajamas and robe for his shower.

After his shower, Ron was laying down on his bed now, just staring up at the ceiling as another one of those stupid migraines came on. The throbbing headache made it feel like his head was going to explode, along with the nausea, which was a new symptom of his migraines. Luckily for him, tomorrow was his day off. He had no excuse not to go to the hospital tomorrow, which he definitely would. After he dealt with a night that would probably go on without sleep.
