You can’t promise that, she wants to say, but she lets him believe it. Lets herself believe it too at the moment, because it’s a nice thought to have. Mai can’t bring herself to argue when he leans down to kiss her, slowly as if he wasn’t about to leave, and much less when he places a hand on the side of her stomach to bid their child farewell, too.
Instead, she says, “We’ll be waiting.”
Zuko leaves an hour past noon without any fanfare, but not without telling her that she should be expecting some company in a day’s time while he was away. Mai had groaned, thinking he’d sent for her mother and her aunt, but sent him on his way without question. Had she known she would be expecting a group of people instead of two, though, she definitely would have held him back for a couple more minutes to ask why he called for the Kyoshi Warriors to come to the palace.
