    Summary

Nearly a year before the first letter arrived, the members of the 118 had been assembled in the loft at the end of a forty-eight-hour shift and informed that they were going to therapy.

The announcement was Bobby’s, though the requirement had come from somewhere above him. In the weeks following the earthquake, the department had examined its response and discovered, among failures of equipment and communication, that firefighters did not reliably volunteer when the work had begun to affect them. This had apparently surprised someone. Crews assigned to incidents of a certain scale would henceforth undergo psychological assessment and complete one of several approved forms of follow-up care.

Nobody at the table received the news with enthusiasm.

“You can choose individual sessions or one of the groups,” Bobby said. “But everybody chooses something.”

    “No,” Buck said.

    OR

A year after joining an anonymous correspondence program for first responders, Eddie receives his first letter in the aftermath of Buck’s lawsuit and finds himself relating far too deeply to a stranger whose pain feels disturbingly familiar.
