Work Text:

“Shit– There’s only 2 people left..” Jay murmured, gripping tighter onto the hand he was holding as the line ahead got smaller. “Fuck! What do I get?”

Kai laughed, tilting his head. “I thought swearing was a sign of weak verbal skills?”

“This is a stressful moment. We can forget about that for a moment.” Jay explained, eyes scanning over the menu once more.

The brunette nodded and Jay pretended not to notice the way he rolled his eyes at his antics. His brain was stuck between powdered sugar and raspberry topping. If he got powdered sugar, he’d like that for sure. It was safe.

But the raspberry filling? He’d never tried it before, but boy did it sound good. But what if he wasted money on something he didn’t like? He wasn’t sure what Kai was getting, so he didn’t necessarily have a backup plan to fall onto in case the fried dough wasn’t good.

Why not just ask him then? A thought supplied, and he nodded to himself in approval.

Turning to his boyfriend, he opened his mouth just as the cashier yelled out ‘next’

Shit.

Kai turned to the woman, nudging Jay to go. “You’re getting the fried dough right?”

Shit.

If Kai was relying on him to pick, that made everything 10x worse.

He nodded, looking at the woman behind the counter. “I dunno what to get on top..”

“Powdered sugar’s a classic,” Kai offered, and Jay nodded. He knew that! Everybody did.

Jay hesitated a little more, darting back to the raspberry filling with panic in his eyes as he realized he was holding up the line.

“Can we do one that’s half ‘n half?”

The woman nodded, looking expectantly at Jay for an answer. At her gesture, a wave of relief crashed over him, and he finally opened his mouth to speak.

“Fried dough, half powdered sugar with the other half raspberry filling.”

She nodded again before turning and barking an order to the kitchen staff behind her. “It’ll be out by the sidewindow in a second. Cash or card?” She offered, and Kai’s hand moved faster than Jay’s.

“Card,” He got out quickly, tapping it down. Jay took a moment to glare at him, earning him a small smile from the other man. With a sigh, they got out of line and walked to the side of the stand.

They stood together, hand in hand. Jay thanked his heart for falling in love with the fire elemental for the millionth time this year as controlled heat traveled up his arm. Dating somebody with fire powers proved absolutely amazing, especially in the fall and winter.

Soon enough, the confectionary creation appeared in the window, and Kai took it upon himself to carry it. “Smells good.” He said, bringing it close to his nose to sniff. Jay would’ve done the same if the crisp air didn’t prevent him from smelling.

How did the cold prevent one from smelling? Damn.

They found a bench to sit on– by the ferris wheel, because that was their next stop– and readied the forks. Kai took out his phone for a quick picture, pausing as his eyes darted to Jay.

He repositioned the camera, pointing it at the boy. “Smile!” He said, earning a small eyeroll before a practiced smile painted itself upon his face.

Jay mumbled a small ‘Cheese’ as the camera clicked, and it took a minute to make sure Kai liked it.

When Kai nodded in approval, he took it upon himself to snag his fork and press his knife and fork down into the raspberry filling. “I’m excited,” He explained, and Kai nodded dreamily, like he was so happy to see Jay scarf down a bunch of calories.

“You’ve never had the raspberry filling before?”

Pausing before the confection hit his mouth, he looked back. “How’d you know?”

“Because I’m very skilled in recognizing all Jay-Walker expressions.” Kai explained smugly, gesturing with his hands.

Letting out a sarcastic laugh, he opened his mouth again to let the dough touch his tongue.

Oh my god.

Suddenly regretting not getting the entire thing with raspberry filling, he pretended to wipe a tear. “It’sf sfo good,” He said, trying to talk around the heavenly goodness in his mouth.

Kai just smiled, snapping another photo of his reaction before nodding as if to say ‘I told you so’ before taking a bite himself.

“Damn,” He said simply, pointing at the dough. “This is unbelievably good.”

They ate together, talking incessantly about nothing in particular. Somehow the conversation drifted to a movie due to come out, and the two had made vague plans to go see it. Jay had given Kai the last bite– he had paid, it was only fair– and they’d thrown away the utensils and plate.

“What now?” Kai asked, his hand finding Jay once again.

Jay looked over, a grin pushing his lips in an upwards curve. “Ferris wheel?”

—

Adjusting his sweater, he looked out the ferris wheel carriage and down on the people below. Large groups of crowds congregated below, and he told himself that he could spot the rest of the squad.

“Do you see them?” Jay asked, scanning his eyes on the masses below. He was looking for Zane and Pixal, as the two of them were easiest to spot in a crowd.

“No, you?”

“Nope– Why would I ask if I saw them?” He asked, tone somewhat accusatory.

Kai looked over, scoffing. “I don’t know.. I.. uh”

Jay smiled, getting up from his seat before Kai verbally protested, waving his hands for the other to sit back down.

“What?”

“If you come over here it’ll tip! We might fall out,” He whispered, like raising his voice would loosen the bolts and metal frame holding the wheel together.

Jay giggled, inching closer. “Like this?”

“Don’t do that!”

“Kai, this wouldn’t be up if it’d crash by shifting weight slightly.”

The brunette still looked unconvinced, narrowing his eyebrows at him. Jay let out a sigh, making the rest of the way. “I promise you they run tests everyday before they open the park.”

Finally– somewhat– convinced, Kai scooted over more to let Jay sit. A hand immediately grabbed him, intertwining their fingers and squeezing. It was hard to not smile at his boyfriend’s fear– so what if it was slightly selfish he liked when Kai got scared of heights? The way he’d grab on to Jay was so cute– while he held on for dear life.

“Babe, it’s okay, relax.”

Kai shuddered, looking down. “Easy for you to say.”

“Worst case scenario we’ll summon our dragons and zoom outta here.”

The brunette gave Jay a glare, earning a small kiss from the other. When Jay pulled back, he noticed it seemed to relax the other man which in turn encouraged him to press a dozen more against tan skin.

Leaning forward, Kai readjusted himself for a better fit. Jay could still taste the raspberry and powdered sugar on his lips, and he decided he wanted more. As he swiped his tongue against Kai’s bottom lip, it had the opposite intended effect.

The boy pulled back, looking a little sheepish.

“Wha–” Jay began, starting to worry that something was wrong.

“If we move around too much I’m worried it’ll fall.” Kai explained, looking away quickly.

Jay’s mouth stayed agape before it formed into a smile. He squeezed the brunette's hand, scooting impossibly closer.

“Not on my watch,” He whispered, pressing another kiss to the boy’s cheek.

Laughing, Kai redirected the kiss to his lips. “What the hell are you gonna do?”

“I have yet to figure that out.”

Kai grinned, slotting his mouth against Jay’s as his other hand moved up his arm. “Dork.”

—

Sitting together with Jay’s head resting on Kai’s shoulder, the lights from down below merged together in a sea of rainbow. “‘S pretty, right?”

Kai hummed in agreement, jolting slightly as the ferris wheel began its descent.

“Good thing there’s no serpentine trying to disassemble the ride, huh?” Jay added, ruining the silence with a shit-eating grin.

“Get off.”

Notes:

Okay so I know I did say ninja never quit… WHICH IS TRUE. But I fell asleep and forgot to post so I’m currently writing this in the morning. Cons of staying up to write fanfic I guess.. I regret nothing.
