Summary
Kimi was seven, and Ollie was eight. They had lived in the orphanage for as long as either could remember and they had known very little kindness there. The director kept them hungry, overworked, and cold, while he kept every donation for himself. Fear had stolen Ollie’s voice long ago; he never spoke, and the director called him cruel names for it. But Kimi was always by his side.
Though he was younger, Kimi was sharp and brave. He had learned to read, write, and count during their short time with a tutor, and he understood far more than most children his age. He began slipping small amounts of money from the director’s room, hiding it carefully. It was dangerous — if they caught him, he would be punished terribly. But he did it anyway, for Ollie, and for the chance of a better life.
They had no one but each other. And so, together, they set out. This is the story of their escape, the people who would love and protect them along the way, and how two small boys finally found the home — and the happiness — they had always deserved.
