it just fits

Work Text:

Harley doesn't have any friends.

No, that's a lie. He has two friends. It just happens that one of them is Tony Stark. And the other doesn't live in his town…. or his state, for that matter.

Her name is Paige, and she lives in Maine. She says the city she's in is called Storybrooke, but Harley's pretty sure that's a lie considering the place doesn't actually exist. At least not according to any map he's found. But considering he is a stranger on the internet, if she wants to lie she can do so all she'd like.

They met a little under a year ago. Harley had posted a picture of some bug his sister found, asking for someone to identify it, because God knows he doesn't know anything about them. Apparently it was a "Citris Flatid Planthopper."

Honestly, Harley doesn't know the last thing about insects. So when she said he could send her pictures to indentify whenever, he obviously took her up on the offer. Paige didn't just know about bugs either, but other animals and plants too. After that they started talking more. And she's really nice.

Right now, Harley's making sugar cookies for his sister. She wants star cookies to bring to some slumber party she's going to tonight. And, of course, she waited until last fucking second to ask him. He rolling it out when he hears his phone ding from it's place on the counter. He wipes the flour off his hands as best as he can before grabbing it.

you got a package

He laughs, walking over to the sink so he can wash his hands.

There's a box on sitting on his welcome mat. Just a normal old box with red tape. Harley picks it up and brings it in.

Inside is a cowboy hat. It's grey, with a silver band. The band is made of ribbon, tied into a bow on the left side. It's elaborate, more than Harley would be capable of tying.

This explains why Paige was asking for his measurements the other week. He thought she was just curious, considering her father's a hatter. A pretty renowned one, according to her, though Harley's never heard of him.

When Harley picks it up (by the crown, of course, he's not a monster) to put it on, he spots a paper in the box below it. He places the hat on his head before grabbing it.

Harley,

Happy birthday!

You're a teenager now, oldie.

Harley rolls his eyes. She's only four months younger than him.

You said you needed a new hat, so I thought I'd make you one! Papa helped, but I did most the work. Hope you like it! And let me know how it fits.

Your best friend,

Paige

Harley's grinning by the time he finishes reading. He folds the paper back up, slipping it into his pocket. The had does fit. Perfectly.
