We find ourselves at the worst of times

Summary:

What if the pocket watch was never thrown into the well? What if instead it was simply stored in the royal vault once again?
With Maddox behind bars it poses no real threat... right?

Meanwhile, Pink is struggling with her sister's strange behaviour and feels her life slipping away.
So when she starts to notice corruption threatening to remove her from the timeline forever, she takes whatever precautions necessary to keep herself in the narrative. Unfortunately, not everyone sees her actions as correct and Pink's life is destroyed anyways.

But life has a way of turning itself around, will Pink manage to find herself at her worst?

(this is my second ever fanfic and I'm so bad at summaries I apologise :((((( )

Notes:

Hiiiiii!!!! thank you for clicking on my fic. I'm not very good at writing fics and I'm still trying to figure out my writing style so all criticism is appreciated. <3 I watched this film and thought how horrible this was from Pink's POV so I just had to write it. The romance doesn't kick in for a while as it isn't really the main focus of this story, it mainly focuses on Pink finding herself. enjoyyyyyy. (chapter title from Sofia Isella)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Above the neck

Chapter Text

Beep. Beep. Beep.
Pink slammed her hand down on the top of her alarm clock. She looked over, 8:15. She was late. Again.

She stared up at her ceiling for a few moments before dragging herself out of bed.

Stretching her arms out as she went, she walked over to her wardrobe and pulled out an outfit. It was plainer than her usual ones.

Just a simple skirt and a t-shirt, both pink of course. She put them on and sat down at her dresser.

She did her makeup, taking extra care to make her skin look less grey and lifeless, and did her usual pink eye makeup.

She looked at herself. She looked normal. Good. That was what she wanted.

Over the last few months she had truly fell off the deep end. Not that anyone would notice. She had been spiralling ever since the group’s trip to save her mother in wonderland. Since Red started acting strange and had promised her to make an effort only to start rolling her eyes whenever she spoke again the next day.

Ever since then her mental state had royally fell. She felt herself slipping away but still put the effort in to conceal it. She did NOT need anyone picking up on it.

She could handle it, she thought as she ran a brush through her mass of pink hair, just one more month.

At the end of the month she would be back in wonderland, wonderland always made her feel better, right?

Anyways, she put the brush down and gazed blankly at her reflection. She smiled at herself. Not a real one. The fake one she plastered on in front of everyone. The one that Red used to be able to notice from a mile away, but now just accepted it like everyone else.

She tried to make it look as natural as possible before standing up and exiting her dorm room.

She made her way to her locker to grab some books before heading to her first lesson.

Once that was done she had a free period before lunch and decided to head back to her dorm.

She spent most of her time there. Red had initially invited her to sit with Chloe, Luis and her other friends but that’s exactly what they were. Her friends. Not Pink’s. Red’s.

So instead she slinked back away to her dorm room. To sleep. To scroll on her phone. Watch TV. Or just sit there, to stare blankly at the wall.

Today she opted for the first option and climbed back into bed.

She woke up hours later to a dull throbbing in her head. She rolled over and tried to stand up.

It was dark out, when did that happen?

As she made her way to her feet, she collapsed back onto her bed.

The pain was intensifying and seemingly making it’s way through her body.

Every breath hurt. Tears rolled down her cheeks and her arms snaked around herself.

5 minutes passed and the pain seemed to pass.

Breathing heavily she pulled herself up on shaky legs. She walked towards her dresser mirror and looked at herself.

Her cheeks were stained with tears, her face was red and blotchy but apart from that, nothing seemed too wrong.

Slowly, she made her way back to bed and curled back up under the covers.

The next day was a Saturday, she woke up and checked her clock, 10:17.

She had missed breakfast, again.

She sighed and sat up in bed.

Slowly, she stretched her arms up over her head, yawning.

When she pulled them down, she noticed something strange.

She was still in her clothes from yesterday after collapsing after her first lesson and seemingly skipping the rest of the day.

Therefore, thanks to her short sleeves, she spotted a series of black lines on the back of her wrist.

She turned her arm around and noticed they carried on, snaking around her wrist and meeting before abruptly stopping.

Weird.

She got up and made her way to her bathroom.

She turned on the sink and tried to wash it off. maybe she had doodled on herself and didn’t remember.

But it wasn’t coming off. And touching it led to sharp waves of pain shooting through her arm. She quickly decided this wasn’t normal.

But she had things to do, so she changed into a jumper and a different skirt, making sure to pull the sleeve fully over her arm before leaving her room once more.

Little did she know, this would be the start of the worst, and weirdly best thing to happen to her.
