Both Jake and Bob gave up hope on ever really finding family, then they get taken in by Navy's Batman, or the closest thing to one, that there exist.
This isn't superhero au, just found family one with a lot of comic metaphors (that Maverick doesn't understand) because Jake and Bob are nerds in this.
Or just after Bradley leaves, Mav gets phone call that somehow ends up turning his world upside down once again.
