What IS a Quasi-Satellite?

Summary:

While it's quiet in the Solar system (since the end of the moon revolution + Europa and Ganymede's banishment), let's focus on someone else!!

Chapter 1: A bittersweet reunion.

Summary:

Earth found her 8 little Quasi-Satellites! Or quasilites for short. And, they haven't been seen by anyone other than the Sun, Earth, Venus, Neptune, Pluto and Luna. How will that change today?

*She cooed, picking up all eight of them lovingly, bringing them close to her face. There were compliant huffs and squeaks of protest.*

"Hehe... Uncle Luna." *FW13, the smallest quasilite, giggled mischievously.*

"Don't. . . I mean, it's right- but it makes me feel old!" *They pouted, crossing their arms.*

*They all giggled at this.*

"OLDIE!!!"

*The Earth burst out laughing at Luna's annoyed yet helpless expression.*

Notes:

guys pls Quasi-Satellite appreciation 🥺

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

[LUNA POV:]

*They hummed softly from their humble position in the Earth's orbit. It had been quiet since the sudden conclusion to the moon revolution. Though, the moons were apparently still having meetings and they hadn't shown up to one yet . . . Oops. They sighed softly. Maybe soon they'd have to go, once the Earth had adjusted to being alone again. Actually, they doubted the moons would even let them in after they spoke out against the revolution. Then again, Titan is the one in charge of the club.  . . . Maybe.*

.

.

.

*A microscopic celestial body, looking like a moon, or an asteroid, rushed past Luna and the Earth, scaring them both. The Earth gasped awake, sitting up way quicker than she should've and almost falling off of her axis despite her moons assistance.* "Urgh— WOAH!"

"OH! Stars . . . Are you alright, Earth?" *Luna rushed over, concern imminent.*

"Yeah. Just a little shaken up." *She stretched her arms, shaking off her fatigue.*

"SORRY!" *A familiar, squeaky female voice called back. A wave of recognition flooded over the both of them. I know who this is all too well.*

"Wait. Is that?" *The Earth asked, a grin spreading across her face. Luna looked at her, they seemed to have the same thought.*

"CARDEA!" *The duo exclaimed in sync.*

"Luna, can you catch up to her?"

*Luna nodded confidently, rushing off a lot faster than she'd ever seen them go. They ran up towards the quickly moving satellite, dodging asteroids at around the same pace as the quasilite, reaching out a hand and grabbing Cardea swiftly.  . . . before tripping over and falling to the floor ungracefully, moon still in hand. She squeaked from inside their hand.*

"Oops— Oh! Hi . . . You know, you can come visit sometime right?" *They smiled eagerly, opening their clasped hands.*

"Heh . . ." *She pressed the tips of her index fingers together.*

"So, are you coming to see the Earth?" *Luna tilted their head curiously, looking down at the tiny satellite laying comfortably on their hand.*

"YEAH!!! I haven't visited in a while, you know how orbits are." *She spun her wrist in a circle, as if Luna is supposed to know, jumping to stand quickly.*

"Ah—not really. Since I orbit the Earth, but you orbit the Sun." *Luna smiled awkwardly. Cardea raised an eyebrow, before clicking her tongue knowingly.*

"Gotcha, gotcha . . . Anyway. LET'S GO! LAST ONE THERE'S A ROTTEN ASTEROID!!" *She yelled, freeing herself and speeding off way faster than Luna could ever go, due to their slow orbiting speed, not even giving them a chance to stand.*

[EARTH POV:]

"EARTH, HEADS UP!" *Cardea squealed, placing her arms in front of herself protectively, before smashing face first against the Earth's hand, which she caught the tiny quasilite in. The Earth switched to a cradling position to hold Cardea close and gently. Cardea snuggled up towards her planet.*

"It's alright, I already knew it was you, little darling." *Earth patted her on the head carefully. Cardea squeaked happily.*

"Are the others nearby?" *Earth looked around eagerly, squinting her eyes due to the brightness of the Sun and her difficulty in spotting the tiny satellites. Cardea scratched her chin thoughtfully.*

"I dunno. But, surely we can break the laws of physics for . . . an Earth day, right?" *Cardea smiled sweetly. The Earth's eyes glimmered, about to speak, before turning her attention to the approaching heavily-breathing moon.*

"You good, Luna?" *She asked, while the quasilite escaped her hand to go find the others. Luna huffed, mostly from exhaustion.*

"Yeah. Guess she gets to call me a rotten asteroid until she forgets then." *They sighed, annoyed at the gross nickname that would probably stick. Earth stifled a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.*

.

.

.

*The pair had completed a whole Solar cards game by the time the Quasi-Satellite had returned, with seven other additions.*

"There you all are! Wow, it's been a while since we've all been together like this, huh?" *The Earth smiled, greetings her children eagerly. There was an echo of excited yelling, squeals, squeaks. Stars, even screaming. Luna drifted over to the group, no longer out of breath.*

"BIG BROTHER!!!!" *Four quasilite's yelled.*

"UNCLE LUNA!!!!!" *The other four retorted.*

.

.

.

*They looked at each other, confused. Some ready to fight before the Earth  stepped in.*

"You four are right, Luna is your uncle. Because he's my brother, and because you all are my babies!" *She cooed, picking up all eight of them lovingly, bringing them close to her face.

*Wiping joyful tears from her eyes, she looked at them all, placing them down.*

"So, how have you all been?" *She scratched the back of her neck nervously, crouching down to their level. She was joined by Luna shortly after.*

*They all yelled at the same time. She couldn't make out any of it, but their expressions seemed positive, so she hoped it was good.*

*She laughed warmly once again, before settling down and glancing back at her little children, moving to a position of laying down to look at them easier.*

"You all haven't changed . . . So tiny-! So silly . . ." *She hummed softly. The younger quasilites giggled, pushing against the Earth's face or exploring her long hair, which reached around her hips.*

"Oh!" *She looked up to find Kamo'oalewa clinging to her bangs playfully.* "Get out, you lot!" *She grumbled, shaking her head, causing them to fall out. Though, she caught them before they fell.*

[LUNA POV:]

*They chuckled at Earth having such a nice time with the little Quasi-Satellites. Though, they couldn't help but feel on edge, as if they were being . . . watched. It moved. They stepped in front of the Earth instinctively and defensively at the sudden commotion in the asteroid belt. The Earth held the quasilites in her hands, clasping them together as a shield for the little ones.*

"Something wrong, Luna?" *She questioned nervously. Luna stayed unmoving. The silhouette stepped forward to reveal itself, hands raised in surrender. It was . . . It WAS . . .*

.

.

.

*Titan. They were scared for nothing, I guess. Luna stared at the moon curiously, trying to figure out his intentions.*

"Hey, Luna! Sorry to uh disturb y'all at whatever you're doing." *Titan spoke happily, it seems like he forgot what happened in the moon revolution or something. IO and Callisto followed closely behind Titan.*

"H-h-h-h-hi Luna!!!" *IO stammered, yet grinned excitedly. Callisto nodded towards Luna as if they were acquaintances.*

*Luna smiled at this, the Earth waved shyly with her free hand, quickly throwing the other hand behind her back.*

"We were just wondering if you wanted to join our Moon Club meeting!!!!" *IO smirked, before coughing loudly, frightening the quasilites from inside the Earth's gentle hands.*

"Not to seem rude or anything..." *Luna started.* "But is there a reason for the meeting?"

"Well, we just wanted to check in on everyone's relationship with their planets since the revolution." *Titan spoke eagerly. Someone's excited since Saturn remembered everyone's names.  . . . With the Earth's help.*

*Luna thought for a moment, looking back at the Earth's hand before answering nervously;*

"Ah- Uh- I'll catch up later!" *They stuttered shyly.*

"Oh, well alright then. See you at the meeting later, Luna!" *Titan waved goodbye, followed shortly after by Callisto and IO's goodbye's.*

.

.

.

*Luna waited until the moons had completely disappeared before sighing with relief. The Earth released the Quasi-Satellites from her hand. They stepped out shyly.*

"Is it . . . over?" *PN7 asked quietly.*

"Yeah! They're not dangerous or anything . . . So you don't have to worry about that. It's just—people don't really know what Quasi-Satellites are. So I'm not sure how they would react." *The Earth twirled her hair with her fingers nervously.*

"Maybe I could take them to the Moon Club meeting? They are technically moons." *Luna spoke up, hoping to be helpful. The Earth glanced up, pondering the suggestion carefully, before giving in and nodding. An unsure smirk spread across her face.*

"Ground rules, okay?" *She crouched down towards the little moons. They nodded along.*

"Stay near Luna, don't talk to any Moon you or Luna don't know, watch out for asteroids, stay together, be polite. Okay?" *The Earth said sternly. The eight of them, alongside Luna nodded eagerly.*

"I promise I'll look after them!!!" *They saluted mockingly, before their expression turned serious.*

"Okay, I'm walking you in there." *She crossed her arms. Luna gasped.*

"Wha- Earth! It'll be too dangerous there. Let me take care of them." *They pointed to themselves proudly. The Earth looked at them, irritated.*

"Look, Luna. I will be taking them in, and that's final. They are my children, and I will be protecting them. Okay?" *Luna tried to argue back, but glancing at the Earth's dedicated expression, they went quiet. Only nodding. The Earth seemed pleased at this, smiling and picking up all the Quasi-Satellites in her arms, rocking them gently along the way.*

"JUST LET ME GO IN FRONT!!" *Luna squeaked, running after the Earth.*
