Can We Pretend This isn't What it is? Even For Just a Moment Longer.

Summary:

Dean and Sam have been playing a game with each other, though every day they get closer to realizing this is more than just a game.

for microcest prompt #43: Incest Chicken

Notes:

bit of folklore to know: an Ijiraq is an inuit folkloric creature which can mask itself as any human and likes to steal children :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Neither of them knew when it started, and neither of them knew if they wanted to stop. It might've started as some cheap joke Dean started, some game that he came up with when bored at a motel one night. But regardless of it's origins, it's grown into something different. Now they were at some rich folks’ fancy wedding reception where everyone thought they were dating. And they had to sell it or else someone might get suspicious of them and begin to wonder what the hell they're even doing at this wedding in the first place.

"Watch out for the Ijiraq. It could be anyone here." Dean said, his hand dangerously low on his baby brother's back.

"You don't have to tell me. I'm as alert as you." But that was exactly what Dean was worried about, because he couldn't focus on anything but Sam's lips and the way he had his arms wrapped around his neck. If this thing came out and snatched up a bunch of kids, he would still be stuck on Sam's warm breath on his neck.

The music slowed down, getting more and more romantic, and the couples around them began to kiss. Sam looked at Dean and swallowed. “Well, we kind of have to. We don’t want anybody to get suspicious.” He whispered into his ear, and Dean shivered.

He leaned in and kissed his brother. It wasn’t the first time since they’d begun this charade, but it was the first time in front of other people. And it was the first time Sam initiated it. And it was the first time Sam slipped some tongue in.

“I–” Dean stuttered as he pulled away, and he clenched his teeth together to keep from saying more.

It was then that they heard cackling, and a child screaming in the distance. The party was too loud for anyone else to hear, but the noise pulled them away from staring into each other’s eyes, imagining, thinking for just another moment that this could be more than a simple game.

They quickly adjourned, running off to go find the Ijiraq and the presumed kidnapped child, ignoring the tenseness in their chest which was becoming so common ever since this game of theirs begun. That pull towards deviancy, towards the taboo. It was only a matter of time until it swept them up and tugged them under the waves of it. They couldn’t resist the siren’s song forever. And they couldn’t pretend this was “just a game” or some practical joke for much longer.

Not when Sam kept looking at Dean with those big doe eyes, and Dean kept inching closer in their shared bed each night, wrapping his arms around him and holding him like he was the only thing left in the world.
