Chapter 1: Blast from the past

Chapter Text

When Spencer was 10 he told his father that he didn't want to be a hunter. Cue screaming and things being thrown, Sam crying and Dean trying to play the peacemaker. Fights like these were common in the Winchester household, well house was a bit of a stretch, the boys had been raised in dingy motels on sketchy streets.

Usually it would end in John storming off to get drunk or the boys being dropped off at Bobby's for a few days that stretched into a few weeks. This time was different though. John told spencer to pack his shit then proceeded to throw $20 at Dean. Ignoring his children's protests John buckled his youngest into the car and drove him to Las Vegas.

A few years back John had saved William Reid and his wife from a witch who was cursing family's who couldn't have children. So when John shows up on their doorstep with lanky, too smart for his age Spencer what else was William to do but take the boy in. He saw how Diana desperately wanted a child and maybe it would encourage her to take her meds.

Spencer actually figured out what was happening when his father handed the forged paperwork to Mr Reid. Only months later would Spencer realize that all the paperwork was ready and that ment John was going to leave him anyway.

Through tears and begging and apologies Spencer was pried off of his father's leather jacket and thrust into the arms of his new one. Spencer sobbed as John drove away. The crying didn't stop when Diana hugged him, the fist mothers touch he'd ever known. The crying didn't stop when he finally got a permanent school after so long of bouncing from place to place. The crying didn't stop when William Reid left only a few months after taking Spencer in. Eventually the crying did stop, on the outside. Never on the inside. The ache for his big brother's hugs, the indent from where his twin brother was ment to be curled up in his side.

As Spencer grew bigger his feelings grew smaller. Until every hunter instinct was tucked away in a small box labeled 'Things that will make people worried about you.' Alongside it the fact Diana was paranoid schizophrenic and that she wasn't his real mother. That his real father had abandoned him to never see his brother's again with a man he'd met once 4 years ago.

Maybe that was why when Spencer joined the BAU he never told anyone. Even Gideon which turned out to be a good idea since he left as well. Maybe Spencer just wasn't ment to have a father, or a mother for that matter. After 7 years of working on the team Spencer would consider these people family. Morgan was a good substitute for Dean, despite the fact that his older brother was only 14 when John threw him out he imagined him and Morgan to be quite similar.

And in her own unique way Garcia reminded him of Sam. Spencer's twin was always first to jump to research, he didn't like the actual hunt as much as their brother and father, just like Garcia memorized the case so she didn't have to look at the images when she briefed them.

Hotch was sort of like John only he didn't borderline abuse his son. His unit chief's sternness was always professional but there were certain exceptions where the team would be graced with a smile. Spencer could count on one hand the amount of times his biological father smiled at him.

Rossi was like Bobby. He just felt like your uncle. Maybe it was the fact that he was the oldest on the team, or maybe it was that his office was filled with books and whenever Spencer walked in he was 8 again and John was dropping the boys off at the Sioux Falls town drunk.

Spencer had called Bobby when he turned 18. The semi retired hunter had told him that he'd always be welcome and to stop being an idjit and just visit. So at least once a year Spencer would make the trip to South Dakota and spend a weekend at Bobby's.

That was how he learned John had died. Before his yearly visit Bobby had called him and said his brother's were there, they'd gotten into a crash and John had made a deal to save Dean. Spencer felt numb hearing his father was dead, he would never get an answer for why he gave him away.

He decided not to go that year. He knew his brother's were okay and probably needed space to grieve. Spencer showing up after 12 years when their father dies and suddenly inserting himself back into the family wouldn't do anyone good. So he stayed away and waited for the right time.

The right time never came. When Bobby called and said Sam had died then Dean made a deal with a demon and had a year left. He helped from afar, reading more lore books then he had in years hoping to God that he could find something Bobby hadn't. But Dean went to hell. Then Bobby told him that Sam had gone off the grid wasn't answering any calls.

Spencer's team could tell something was wrong. He was quiet, snapping at them and they thought he was using again. After a very awkward intervention where Garcia and JJ cried Spencer said somebody he knew had passed. When they all apologized Spencer held back tears as he said that he hadn't spoken to them in years anyway.

4 months later Dean was alive and angels are apparently real. Spencer's emotions had been dragged through hell by this point. His brother's were trying to stop the apocalypse, and that was more important then a reunion of a brother they probably want to forget anyway. They were doing just fine without him.

So Spencer didn't call when Lucifer broke free. He didn't call when Sam went in the cage. He didn't call when Sam got his soul back.

Spencer knew that his brother's were wanted by the FBI and were legally dead. He knew they were alive and that Bobby was helping them stay dead this time so another Hendrikson situation didn't happen. Maybe that's why when he walked into the round table room he wasn't expecting to see Sam and Dean's faces plastered on the screen.

The sight made the profiler's heart stick in his throat, each thump cutting off airflow for a second until Spencer felt lightheaded. He always knew this was a possibility, hunter's aren't exactly friends with the law. But after they were pronounced dead a knot that lumped in his stomach had melted away, he thought he'd never see his brother's files pass over his desk.

When Prentiss lightly taps his shoulder Spencer nearly jumps out of his skin, her confused brown eyes bore into his and although there was a rule against inter team profiling he it felt like she was trying to read all his secrets.

"You okay Reid?" Spencer nodded and slid into his normal seat ignoring his team's prying eyes.

"Yeah. I was just surprised to see the Winchester's. They're Dead right?"

Hotch nods and taps on his tablet, eyes scanning over each word about the brother's. "So we thought, but the Winchester's have faked their deaths before. They were sighted and arrested in West Virginia, they were traveling with another man." The unit chief nods to Garcia who clicks the remote and a driver's license photo of James Novak appears next to the brothers.

Spencer internally curses. Bobby had told him about Castiel and his vessel. The angel didn't know how to act human, apparently he'd gotten better the past year but he was also busy with a civil war in heaven so who knows what an angel on a time crunch was going to do.

Hotch unaware of the youngest agents inner turmoil continues. "James Novak was reported missing by his wife a little over three years ago. The West Virginia police stated that Novak believes he's an angel, Castiel. We know the Winchester's have religious delusions and it's possible that they managed to convert Novak to their beliefs telling him that he is an angel."

Morgan pipes up arms crossed over his chest the lack of sympathy for the brother's clear in his voice. "So why were we called in if they've been caught?"

Rossi sighs and runs a hand over his face, "the Winchester's have escaped from custody and faked their deaths too many times, with the added variable of Novak they want us to go profile them. Also more agents means more people they'd have to go through"

Spencer feeling like he's been too quite to be acting normal tries to keep his voice steady as he talks. "The Winchester's are walking contradictions. Their delusions stem from many different delusions. Usually with partner killers there's a submissive and a dominant. We profiled Dean as the dominant and Sam as the submissive but there's been times that Dean was inactive and Sam got more violent. Instead of intensifying each other they seam to calm each other down. Not to mention when Sam went to Stanford and kept a clean record for four years."

Prentiss picks at her nails, she only does that when she's stressed. Spencer should really stop her but he was currently doing to same under the table. Her brows furrow as she speaks. "Their crimes are mainly non sexual other then five years ago with Dean and a Rebecca Warren. They caught him in the act and then tied him to two other murders. That was also the first time Dean faked his death."

"It's rare for male killers to not have a sexual component unless maybe he has someone to fulfill his desires." JJ suggests making Spencer subtly scrunch his nose and the thought of his brother doing anything like that.

Rossi flips through the files. "He did seam to be more subdued after Novak came into the picture, that was also after a 4 month cooling off period. Maybe that's why they took him? Sam got jealous and took off by himself. When Novak couldn't satisfy Dean's needs anymore he met back up with Sam and got back to killing."

Hotch looks at his watch and starts packing up the photos and files. "We can discuss this more on the plane. Wheels up in 20."
