"There you are!"
If DJ had the presence of mind to care, he would've probably thought that, for once, Superfish looked quite intimidating. He had never seen the witch so furious, like he was about to go off on him right there and then. But DJ didn't feel present when he was drunk out of his mind, and lit up when he heard his voice.
"Superfish~" he called sweetly. "I didn't know you were coming!"
"I wasn't, until I found out you weren't in bed like you were supposed to be," Superfish grumbled, stepping closer. "I thought you don't do parties."
DJ was not listening. He staggered into Superfish's body and immediately slumped on him, clearly losing the will to move, and Superfish caught him in his arms. It was only then that he saw the rest of the occult club leaving the building.
"Seb! You should've joined us!" Eugene cried out when he spotted him. "It was sooo fun!" Georgie nodded so hard his head might have fallen off.
"Correct." Even Mandy was buzzing with joy, cheek flushed as she bounced on her feet. "You should join next time! It could be a team-bonding activity!"
"I'll think about it," he said dryly.
The club members continued discussing whatever happened at that party. It didn't sound too bad—drinking games, watching a bar fight, dancing until Eugene literally collapsed on top of Mandy, apparently. Superfish half-listened to them, trying to wake DJ. He nearly dropped him when there was a tap on his shoulder.
"Hey," Daisuke said, like he didn't nearly scare his soul out of him. "You're taking DJ home?"
"Yes." Superfish gripped DJ harder, the younger making a small noise at the movement. "I'll take it from here."
Daisuke nodded and moved to try to coax a very drunk (and seemingly yelling) Eugene into his car. Superfish turned his attention to DJ, who was at least awake enough to blink at him very slowly. It was strangely reminiscent of the way his cat looked at him. Superfish stifled a smile, shaking DJ a little.
"Hey, get up. Won't your brother be upset?"
"Mmh... he won't be home... I think..."
Superfish hoped that he was right on that, he had no idea how he would explain this to a man he was just meeting for the first time. He looked around to make sure the rest were already in the car and snapped his fingers to call his Vespa. It arrived within seconds, and he managed to wake DJ enough to climb on the seat behind him.
Instead of gripping his shoulders like he usually did, DJ's arms went around his waist.
Superfish flinched, but DJ didn't notice, resting his head on the back of his neck, too tired to hold himself up. His warm breath hovered over his neck, and Superfish could feel a familiar sort of heat rising to his face. And he had to drive all the way to DJ's house like this!? He could already feel that stupid tight feeling in his chest again...
He started the Vespa anyway, letting DJ catch the rest he needed.
They rode in silence the entire way, DJ halfway asleep at his back and Superfish trying to think of anything but that. They arrived at DJ's house in the same position, and the thought of getting DJ off him was simultaneously relieving and mournful. He helped DJ stagger into the house.
Once inside, he magicked his and DJ's shoes and socks off at the doorstep. Fortunately, DJ was right about his brother not being home. Superfish couldn't help but wonder how often he was gone if he wasn't sleeping at home on a Friday night. DJ tripped over air, falling onto Superfish. Giving up on trying to make him walk, he simply lifted DJ into his arms to carry him up the stairs.
He nuzzled into his neck, and— fuck, there was that weird feeling in his chest again, like his heart was being squeezed through a tube. DJ had no idea what he did to him when he looked at him like that, soft and fond in all the ways Superfish couldn't understand. There was nothing he had to be fond of, yet DJ saw something lovable all the same, even in a state like this.
Aloo came bouncing out of nowhere, whining loudly at him. He nodded at her, hoping she understood that his hands were full. She quietly followed him up the stairs while he glowed his magic for a light, carefully keeping DJ close to himself. He opened the door to DJ's familiar room with his elbow, Aloo slipping in behind him.
Superfish layed DJ down on his bed. His eyes fluttered closed and back open, burying further into the bedsheets. Superfish swallowed.
"There you go," he said, playing exasperated. "Don't get out of this bed till at least 2, okay? You need rest."
DJ blinked at him slowly, lips pulled into a sleepy pout. Seeing DJ all tired and cute like this was doing things to him, making him want to do something stupid, like curl up beside him and keep him in his arms forever. Superfish turned to leave, but before he could, his hand was grabbed.
"Can you stay?" DJ made his best puppy eyes, ones that made him almost give in on the spot. "I missed you so much today..."
Superfish's eyes widened, and he resisted the urge to flinch away. "What are you saying, DJ? You must be drunker than I thought. You need to sleep, right now."
DJ pouted further, fluttering his eyelashes in a way that made Superfish's stomach swoop. "Will you stay?"
He hesitated. He can't stay over every time DJ asks—there's only so many times he can use 'protecting the core' as an excuse. But DJ looked at him pleadingly, eyes all wide and hopeful, and Superfish can't kick him when he's down. "Do you really want me to stay that badly?" he asked in a whisper.
"There's nothing in the world I want more. Please... don't ever leave me."
You know I can't promise that, Superfish didn't say. He felt that, somehow, this didn't pertain to just staying tonight. But DJ most certainly didn't mean what he was saying. Not only was he drunk, but he was also half asleep, his grip on Superfish loosening gradually. If he wanted to, he could just leave now—let DJ fall asleep thinking that he stayed, and wake up to find that he hadn't.
He couldn't do that. Not to him.
DJ's breathing softened into a rhythm as he fell asleep, Superfish escaping his grasp with a sigh. Why did this human make him feel so...
Aloo pawed at his leg, snapping him out of his daze. He reached down to pet her as she nuzzled into his hand. "Hi, beautiful, do you need me to set up a blanket for you?"
She meowed at him and walked away, hopping on top of the bed. She squeezed in beside DJ's head, purring softly. He minutely relaxed into the bed. Superfish found himself smiling.
He fished out a blanket from DJ's closet, laying it over the human. For a moment, he simply stood there and watched DJ breathe, curled around his beloved cat, assuring himself that he was safe. For such a straight-laced guy, he sure had a knack for trouble. Then, he scolded himself for being weird and staring at someone asleep.
But he couldn't bring himself to leave. DJ had asked him to stay. Even if Superfish hadn't responded, he'd still requested him, and for some fucking reason, he could deny him nothing.
Superfish stepped away with a sigh. Guess he's sleeping over.
