Summary
“I don’t want you to die for me,” Will whispered, looking up to meet Mike's eye, then, welling up at the mere thought.
“And I didn’t have to. If I had, I wouldn’t have hesitated. But I didn’t have to. You saved me and yourself, okay?”
“I still hurt you,” Will whimpered, a tear slipping down his cheek, carrying all the weight of his remorse in a single droplet.
“No,” he shook his head, clutching Will’s face in both of his hands, staring at him with so much intensity that he almost wanted to look away. Almost. “Nothing you do could ever hurt me, Will. Nothing,” Mike breathed.

Following Will's coming out and their plans to infiltrate the Abyss, things go awry as Mike's mind gets taken ahold of by Vecna. In an attempt to escape, Mike finds himself following a tangled web of memories, though not ones belonging to him, and they become more enlightening than he realised was possible.

“You– you just need to fight, okay? Get out of there!” Mike pleads with him, but Will can only watch as his mother draws closer. His heart beats out his chest, as if a bucket of cold water was just dropped on him
“Mike,” Will begs. “I don’t– I don’t wanna go, I-- I can’t–” He gasps for air, fear overtaking him. His hand squeezes Mike’s arm hard enough to bruise, but Mike does not flinch. His hand desperately threads through Will’s hair, the other still cradling his face.
“You’re gonna be okay, it’s gonna be fine.” Mike's voice breaks, a whine ripped from his throat. “Just stay with me Will, I'm here.”
Or: An episode 7/8 canon divergence in where Will is unable to leave Vecna's mind when he's killed.

Summary
Before the ground can erode any further, Will’s hands rip away from each other, a rumble louder than he knows he can muster clawing its way out of his chest. A load of tendrils fly apart in tandem, the inner workings of the Mind Flayer rippling out into the orange sky — and Will does it again, watching as the exploding globs of black, blood, and guts recoil onto him. A screech louder than Will’s ears can register grapples its way out of the being, past the horrifying teeth and spiked head that Will could recount the outline of even his nightmares — especially in his nightmares. But he only watches the film coincidingly, a relentless shock burying itself into the marrow of his bones, which seems to have no fight as the creature slams down to the ground in front of Will.

In which, Will confronts the Mind Flayer like he was supposed to. He’s bloody, black, and Mike may be a little bit in love. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t supposed to happen.

Summary
Stranger Things Five Finale rewrite.
The party heads into the Upside Down with a plan to destroy both it and Vecna once and for all. Will thinks he has taken the steps necessary to keep Vecna from using his fear and his secrets against him. But he is not the only one who is scared and he is not the only one who is keeping secrets. Vecna has spotted Will's weakness, and if Mike can't face up to his own demons, admit his own feelings and stop being the most repressed asshole on the face of the planet then he risks losing everything that matters to him.
