With the Hollander-Rozanovs, Barrett, and Harris attending the All-Stars, Luca had volunteered to dog-sit.
Still early, he, Chiron, and Anya had the dog park almost to themselves.
Luca crouched, giving Chiron belly rubs while Anya ran circles around them, begging for his attention.
The gate squeaked open behind him. A young man stepped inside, a puppy at his feet. He unclipped the leash, and the puppy took off.
Chiron and Anya immediately joined the race.
The stranger approached Luca. “Nice dogs. Gabby likes them.”
Unsure of dog-park etiquette, Luca just stared.
“What are their names?” the stranger asked.
“Oh.” Luca pointed. “That’s Chiron, and that’s Anya.”
“And who are you?” The stranger took him in.
Was he flirting?
“Lu-Luca.”
“Hi, Luca. I’m Marcus. You come here often?”
Oh, God. He was flirting. Luca felt his cheeks heat.
“Not really. I’m dog-sitting.”
“For a friend?”
Smooth. Definitely flirting.
Luca opened his mouth to answer.
“Fuck! What the hell?!”
They both looked down. Chiron was pissing on Marcus’ leg.
“Shit! I’m sorr-”
“Yeah, whatever. I gotta go.” Marcus glared down at his leg. “Gabby!” He stalked toward the gate.
Luca stared after him. Chiron trotted off, tail wagging.
“Fuck indeed,” Luca groaned.
