Work Text:

And the universe said, "I love you."

The words of the end poem, reminding every player that they are made of the universe's love --- that it keeps them bounded from the nothingness of the void. We are made of love --- we give, and we receive it.

Spoke is not made of love.

Spoke is the all encompassing void.

He fundamentally cannot give.

He takes, and takes, and takes some more.

Like a parasite.

...

Spoke is a bug.

Something needed to be fixed.

An anomaly created from mistakes in the universe's code.

Spoke wants to be fixed.

He wants to give, and give, and give some more.

Spoke tries.

He's a good person, isn't he?

Spoke tries some more.

It's not his fault. It really isn't.

He is doubtful.

...

Players are the most vile creatures, Spoke thinks.

They destroy. They take.

Spoke isn't like them. He's different.

Spoke's actions are for the greater good. Players just take mindlessly --- they don't care about the future of the server.

But, if that was the case, then why is Spoke the one burdened with so much misfortune?

Maybe he deserves it.

Spoke is envious.

So, so envious.

Doesn't he also deserve love?

Spoke doesn't know what else to do other than keep trying.

...

There is no love for Spoke from the universe. At the end of it all, It wouldn't care if he was good or bad. It is indifferent toward his efforts. Spoke doesn't care, or he tries not to. There isn't anything he can do to make the universe acknowledge him.

...

Spoke needs a new universe to love him.

Jamato was that new universe.

He kept up with the voidling's antics. He was his first friend --- his best friend, and an older brother.

He was the one who introduced Spoke to the exploits --- bugs, anomalies, parasites in the world's code.

...

Spoke took it too far and it's all his fault.

He should've listened to Jamato and now he's gone --- gone because Spoke is a ruthless creature who needs the power and its in his nature to be evil and there's no way Spoke can ever control it.

He misses Jamato.

He tries getting rid of the exploited items.

Spoke's fixing it, isn't he?

Why isn't Jamato back?

Spoke loses his star. The one he orbits --- who he loves.

Spoke finds a new star.

...

Mapicc isn't a replacement for Jamato --- but rather an extension of Spoke; an extension Spoke cannot live without.

Mapicc shines brighter than Jamato, but that'll make it hurt more once he inevitably leaves.

Spoke learns that Mapicc is love. Mapicc is his universe. Mapicc is the good in the world, the light, the soft wind that caresses his skin and ruffles his hair and tells Spoke that everything is going to be ok.

There is no Spoke without Mapicc and no Mapicc without Spoke.

Their roots intertwine --- locking together like two puzzle pieces meant to be.

But Spoke destroys and takes.

He sucks you dry of all the trust and love and nutrients, and it hurts --- not because you gave so much, but because he lied. He led you along with bonemeal and sunlight and you followed him --- like a dog to its owner or a devotee to their god.

But its to be expected, right?

After all, the void never gives.

...

Spoke is a liar. A dirty, filthy liar. One that catches every down-turned glare and tries to justify his actions to no avail.

He ruins himself better than anyone else could.

...

Spoke is a liar. A rather pitiful one.

He rambles to a mirror, the only thing to trust him. Is it out of desperation?

The mirror isn't Mapicc though.

He It watches Spoke bleed and does nothing. It starts doubting --- or maybe the doubt was always there --- and it hates Spoke, but it just watches --- watches as Spoke hurts and hurts and hurts even more as the ache in his heart grows.

...

The last of the mirror shatters, just like Spoke's chestplate. They both break and Spoke can't do anything about it as he it loses what makes itself Spoke.

...

Spoke isn't a player, not really.

It feels pain and joy, but it lacks one crucial element that makes a player a player: love.

It's done with everything --- no more ache in its heart or useless tears that seem to never stop.

Spoke goes back to it's mother, succumbing to the cold nothingness as the void takes back something rightfully theirs
