Jade slowly wakes on a cold winter morning. Blearily, she tries to wrap herself in her blankets, reaching an arm to the other side of the bed, only to find it empty. She cracks an eye open. Where's Dave? The clock reads 6 AM - Dave doesn't do 6 AM.
As her awareness slowly comes back to her, an unpleasant smell reaches her nostrils - it smells like... burning?
Yawning, Jade wraps herself in a blanket before sticking her head out of the bedroom door. A string of curses could faintly be heard from the kitchen, where the smell emanates from.
Ah.
Dave's cooking again.
Jade's girlfriend is good at many things, but cooking is not one of them, to the point where Jade jokingly banned her from the kitchen. She shakes her head, smiling.
Walking into the kitchen, she sees a panicking Dave frantically scraping burnt hashbrowns out of a pan, while another still sizzles dangerously on the stove.
"Dave, what are you even doing?" she asks, softly laughing. Dave startles, whipping her head towards her, eyes wide as saucers behind her signature shades.
"Fuck, you're not supposed to be up yet! I was gonna bring you breakfast in bed and everything - GAH!"
The pan on the stove suddenly catches on fire, startling them both, and the fire alarm screeches - the pan Dave was scraping clatters into the sink as she starts panicking. Jade expertly slides a lid over the burning pan, smothering the flames, and turns off the heat. Dave's shoulders sag.
"I'm sorry, Jade," she says, defeated. "I just wanted to surprise you. I got flowers and everything and then I thought hey, why don't I make it even better and bring her breakfast in bed, make my girl feel like a princess, and I guess I'm like, the lady in waiting? That uh-"
Jade shuts her up with a kiss before the metaphor can get away from her.
"It's alright. I... appreciate the sentiment." She pauses for a moment, stroking Dave’s cheek before continuing. "You don't have to impress me, you know? As far as I'm concerned, you're already the best girlfriend I could ever ask for."
Dave blushes furiously - she's so cute, Jade thinks, fondly.
"I... It's just, it's your special day, and-"
"Huh?" Jade asks, puzzled. "What?"
Dave looks at her in a mix of shock and amusement.
"Jade, hon. It's your birthday today."
Oh.
She hadn't realized. It was her turn to blush, now. Dave chuckles and pulls her into a hug, kissing the crown of her head.
"Happy birthday, Jade. Sorry I fucked up breakfast."
"There's still time," Jade mutters. "Let's go out instead. This place needs to air out, anyway." She pulls away from Dave, not before pressing a kiss to her cheek. "How about pancakes?"
"Sounds perfect, hon.”
