   Summary

   He was running out of time, he knew. He had been running out of time his entire life, every moment he breathed into lungs made of flesh and blood instead of wood and ink was a loan he would, eventually, have to repay. He should be dead, so many times over, yet still possessed the presumptuous greed to beg the stars for another sunrise, another letter from his girls, another smile from his oldest and dearest friend.

   The terror of that ticking clock should have been enough, he thought as he stared, wide eyed, down at the delicate branch pushing its way up from underneath his thumbnail.
