Work Text:
The fluorescent lights of Hook & Ladder Company 8 hum a low, constant pitch, casting a stark white glare over the clutter of the lab. Beakers of viscous pink fluid line the counters, bubbling in steady, rhythmic pulses. Ray adjusts his thick-rimmed glasses, his thumb traces the edge of a clipboard, and his eyes light up with that uncritical, boyhood fascination that thirty-five years of living have done nothing to dim. Beside him, Egon stands tall and resolute at forty-five, a stoic pillar in his grey flight suit, meticulously calibrating the spectrode monitoring equipment.
Between them sits a standard, chrome, top-loading toaster. It is currently pulsing with a soft, bioluminescent magenta hue, trembling atop the steel examination table as if it were a puppy waiting for a treat.
"Watch this," Ray says, his voice hushed with the reverence of a scientist on the precipice of a breakthrough.
He cues up the cassette deck. Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher" begins to bounce off the tile walls. Almost instantly, the toaster shifts on its rubber feet. It bobs to the rhythm, its lever sliding up and down like a enthusiastic knee-tap. Peter steps forward, a wide, predatory grin spreading across his face. Before anyone can stop him, he scoops the warm, vibrating appliance into his arms, cradling it against his chest as if it were a newborn infant.
"We're rich," Peter coos, tapping the side of the hot metal. "Do you have any idea what this means? Forget birthday parties. We’ll make a mint with goo-toasters. Every kitchen in America will have an dancing appliance. We’ll license it. Goo-blenders! Goo-waffle-irons!"
Winston leans against the adjacent workbench, arms crossed, staring at the dancing metal box with a mix of deep skepticism and practical concern.
"Peter, the thing runs on psychomagnotheric slime," Winston reminds him, raising an eyebrow. "It’s driven by emotional resonance. The first time somebody gets mad because their frozen waffle is burnt, that thing could bite their hand off."
Peter scoffs loudly, waving a dismissive hand in the air. "Details, Winston! Details! We slap a little warning label on the back. Caution: Do not yell at breakfast. Problem solved."
To demonstrate, Peter thrusts his hand inside the toaster's slot, theatrical agony washing over his features. "Aaagh! Help! It’s got me! The appliance has developed a taste for human flesh! Tell my fans I loved them!"
Winston ignores the spectacle, turning his attention back to the glass vat resting on the center island. The mood slime inside churns, reacting instantly to the room's sudden burst of dramatic tension. Small, aggressive spikes form on its surface, darkening to a bruised purple before settling back down as Ray speaks softly to it.
"It's remarkably sophisticated," Egon observes, his flat, clinical tone cutting through Peter's dramatics. "The slime responds to emotional micro-expressions and tonal frequency. No compliment nor insult is too complicated for it to process."
Ray nods enthusiastically, stepping closer to the glass container. "We sing to it, talk to it, say... supportive, nurturing things to it."
Peter stops his fake struggle, pulling his hand out of the toaster and narrowing his eyes at Ray. "You're not sleeping with it, are you, Ray?"
Ray shakes his head slightly, a visual crease of mild annoyance forming between his brows. Without thinking, his gaze flickers to his right, darting directly toward Egon with a pointed, shared history in his eyes. Beside him, Egon suddenly looks very uncomfortable. His posture, usually rigid and calm, shifts into something rigid and defensive. He clears his throat, shifting his weight from one foot to the other as his gaze drops down to inspect his fingernails.
Peter catches the exchange instantly. His eyes widen in realization, a wicked, delighted smile spreading across his face. "Oh, you..."
Winston blinked, looking between the two senior scientists. "It's always the quiet ones."
"You hound!" Peter shouts, pointing an accusing finger at Egon.
"In my defense," Egon says smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as if presenting a logical defense to a grand jury, "I got permission from Ray."
Winston throws his hands up in complete visual bewilderment. "Why would you need Ray's permission to fuck a ghost?"
Egon blinks, genuine confusion washing over his sharp features. "Would you need permission from Tiyah to fuck a ghost?"
"Obviously," Winston replies instantly, then freezes. He pauses, his brow furrowing as the actual mechanics of Egon's sentence register in his brain. "But she's my fiancee, so why... would..."
Winston's voice trails off. He looks at Ray, whose cheeks are currently flushing a warm pink. Then he looks at Egon, who remains stoic, though his jaw is locked tight. A heavy silence falls over the laboratory, broken only by the quiet rhythm of the toaster still gently swaying to the music. Winston looks genuinely wounded, almost betrayed, as the context of the last five years clicks into place.
"Man," Winston says softly, looking directly at Ray. "We've been doing parlor tricks at kids' birthday parties in giant foam ghost suits, and you don't tell me about your boyfriend?"
Ray rubs the back of his neck, his boyish enthusiasm giving way to genuine, vulnerable earnestness. "I'm sorry, Winston. I just... I could never get a solid read on where you stood on these things. Times being what they are, we kept it close."
Winston's expression instantly softens, replaced by a fierce, supportive warmth. "I'm an advocate, man! You should've told me." He shakes his head, stepping forward. "Tell me I can at least be your best man."
Ray winces slightly, pulling a tight, sheepish smile. "... About that... we got married in 1986."
Winston stops dead in his tracks. "... What??"
"In a quiet civil ceremony in Vermont," Ray explains quickly, his voice full of defensive affection. "It was right after the city slapped the injunction on us. Things were dark, and we just... we needed something that was ours." He brightens up, adding warmly, "He's even developing a better relationship with his daughter."
Winston's jaw drops entirely. "You have a daughter??"
"Callie," Egon confirms gently, stepping slightly closer to Ray's side. "And it's a work in progress, but yes. But!" Egon raises a long finger to emphasize his point. "We still haven't had an actual wedding. I mean, you could certainly be Best Man if we decide to hold a proper ceremony one day."
Ray nods in soft agreement. The tension leaves his shoulders, replaced by a deep, quiet affection that has survived decades of shared physics, poverty, bustin', and late-night research. He leans over, placing his hand gently against the curve of Egon's neck, and presses a sweet, lingering kiss to his husband's cheek. The gesture is entirely natural, born of years of quiet partnership, but it breaks the unspoken barrier of the lab.
The three men turn back toward Peter. He is still standing there, holding the slime-infused toaster against his belly, but his usual smirking demeanor has completely vanished. He looks visibly awkward, shifting his weight nervously, his gaze darting away as if he's stumbled onto something far too intimate for the basement of a firehouse. The slight curl of his lip carries the faint, defensive edge of a jeer he hasn't quite pulled off.
Egon feels the shift instantly. The old, familiar instinct to retreat—to pull inward, to hide behind technical jargon and cold distance—surges up within him. He falters, his shoulders pulling back as he prepares to step out of Ray's space.
Before Egon can pull away, Ray's grip tightens around his waist. Ray doesn't flinch. He pulls Egon firmer against his side, his hand resting solid and warm against Egon's hip, anchoring him completely. Ray turns his head slightly, meeting Peter's awkward glare with a steady, unapologetic warmth, refusing to yield an inch of the ground they've built together. Egon feels the firm, unwavering pressure of Ray's arm. Slowly, the tension drains from his tall frame. He lets out a quiet breath, relaxing into his husband's side, holding his head high as the lab quieted around them.
