Work Text:
The year is 1991, and the crisp air of autumn has settled over the university campus. Dr. John Sturgis, a small, wiry man with a twinkle in his eye, wanders through the grove of maple trees, his mind lost in the beauty of the turning leaves. Beside him walks Dr. Grant Linkletter, the towering experimental cosmology professor, his long strides effortlessly matching Dr. Sturgis' ambling pace.
Grant peers up at the canopy of reds, oranges, and yellows with a hint of cynical amusement in his eyes. As they stroll, the leaves shift from vibrant greens to fiery reds and oranges, casting a dappled light on the ground below. Sturgis keeps stopping at every tree, his childlike wonder evident as he examines each leaf with fascination.
"Isn't it remarkable, Grant?" he exclaims, holding a crimson leaf up to the sunlight. "The way nature transitions from one season to the next, it's a symphony of colors and change."
Linkletter grunts in response, his skepticism of the world around him apparent in his furrowed brow. "It's just chlorophyll breaking down, John. Nothing poetic about it."
Undeterred, Sturgis continues to marvel at the spectacle before him, his eyes alight with curiosity. To John, every rustle of a leaf falling to the ground is a reminder of the beauty in impermanence. He points to a particularly golden tree, its leaves quivering in the gentle breeze.
"Look at how the leaves dance in the wind, Grant. It's like they're whispering secrets to us."
Despite Grant's skepticism, a small smile tugs at the corners of his lips as he watches Sturgis twirl in the swirling leaves, his eyes sparkling with joy. As the autumn leaves swirl around them in a mesmerizing display, even the most cynical of souls can find a glimmer of magic in the changing of the seasons.
