The Heartslabyul common room was dark, the red walls flickering with shadows from a candle lit in one corner. It was quiet and empty, as most had gone off to their rooms. You sat on one of the plush couches, dressed nicely and watching the candle’s flame as wax cried down the side of the candle.
Trey was busy in the kitchen, preparing something he called “particularly special” for you. The kitchen door swung open and in swept Trey, wearing his best trousers and a nice, crisp white button-up shirt. He was holding a covered silver platter and his eyes shone behind his glasses.
“Okay, I’m ready.” Trey set the platter down on the coffee table in front of you and sat down. “And, again, I’m really sorry I had to push our date back so late. Unbirthday Parties are insanely busy and—”
“It’s fine, Trey,” you interrupted. “As long as I get to spend time with you, it's fine.”
Trey smiled, nodding to himself. He then gestured towards the platter. “Well, don’t be shy. It’s for you.”
You leaned forward curiously, looking up at him over your shoulder before back to the gift. Trey nodded again with encouragement. Your fingers grasped the handle, pulling the cover off and setting it to the side.
There on the platter sat a velvet box. Confusion creeped over your shoulder and you turned to Trey.
“What’s this?”
“Open it,” he said. “You’ll like it, I promise.”
Taking his word for it, you reached for the little box, fingers brushing over the velvet. Inside the box rested a simple locket, oval shaped and engraved with a small flower. It was elegant, glinting in the fire-light. You took it into your hand, feeling the cool touch of the medal to your palm, and smiled. Trey leaned closer, beaming at your reaction.
“Trey. . .” You looked back over to him, eyes shining with delight.
“I knew you’d like it.” Trey’s hand had made its way to the small of your back.
“I love it,” you replied. Your free hand cradled his jaw and he leaned into it. “Thank you.”
“It’s no problem.” Trey took the locket from your hand with delicate ease. “Want me to put it on?”
You nodded and turned your back to him. A moment later, the locket rested against your chest and the chain was secured. He turned you back to face him, grinning.
“Have I told you, you look amazing tonight?”
“You have now,” you giggled, fiddling with Trey’s tie. His hand hooked around the back of your neck, pulling you in for a sweet kiss. You were pressed firmly into him, the hand on your back sliding up to join its brother to cup your face.
When Trey pulled away, still holding your face, his glasses were a bit fogged, making you both chuckle as an ‘I love you’ tumbled from his lips.
He couldn't help but wish every night ended like this as you whispered it back into his neck.
