Summary
Tiny, trembling hands pull away from the boy's face, hot tears now dripping down his far-too-thin cheeks. His breath hitches, then hiccups, his body beginning to process the trauma he'd just endured before his mind can even catch up.
His stomach rumbles, a painful reminder of the reason he's even hurt in the first place, and the boy, futilely wiping at his tears, turns to try to find his bread.
He finds it. But before he can get to it an impossibly low rumble vibrates the ground beneath his torn and bleeding feet.
Slowly craning his neck, the boy looks up, and freezes.
There, peering intently at him with six dark, sparkling eyes is a massive reptilian creature, so dark in color it may as well have been the night itself. It moves and the teeth it had been hiding in its jaws catch the light.
The boy swears he sees his very short, miserable life flash before his eyes.
Or what he can remember of it, anyway.
