There is something living under his church, deep below. He can feel it when he sleeps, feel it when he prays. It is not any god he knows of, but he does not think it a devil either, nor some great evil. It is just something…living. Something that breathes and makes the very foundations creak. Something that brings the sharp scent of wood ash and lye, bubbling up in his head the longer he stays in the small dark corners of this place he calls home, filling in all the cracks. It doesn’t make him feel afraid, though he thinks some deep animal part of him feels he should. Instead it makes him feel safe, watched, entombed.
What better feeling for a shut-in priest? What could be more convincing that he’s finally found his home? It took so long, years and worlds and shattered things. He wouldn’t give it up even if he was truly scared. He’s too stubborn for that, he’s had to be.
