Work Text:

“achoo!” bonnie sneezes, followed by a horrible, raspy coughing fit. it knocks the wind out of her, and she can’t remember the last time she was this sick.
“oh, dear, princess, you need to get some more rest,” peppermint butler fretted as he put a cold rag on her forehead. “i’ll go make you some more tea. please excuse me, princess.”

bonnie just grunts, far too tired to reply. she can’t believe how weak she feels right now, and it doesn’t seem like her flu will go away anytime soon. every other second, she’s coughing and sneezing, and sometimes, she even manages to puke. being sick is disgusting, and she can’t wait until it’s over. then again, who wouldn’t? being sick and bedridden is just the worst.

she can’t wait for peppermint butler to get back, she’s too drained to stay awake a second longer. with a stuffy nose and dry throat, bonnie drifts off to sleep, but it’s not long before she’s woken up by a knock. she tries to ignore it, but glob, is it the most annoying thing ever.
“peppermind butler, you can just come in-” wait. the knock isn’t coming from the door.

it’s coming from the window, and bonnie knows exactly who it is. it’s marceline who for some reason refuses to use the front door. regardless, bonnie still wants to see her, but how could she possibly move in a state like this? the knocking gets closer together, and at this point, it’s more irritating than anything. so with what little strength she has, she gets up and opens the window.

“bonnie!” marceline lights up and immediately drops the rocks in her hands. so that’s why her knocking sounded so weird. she flies up to her without missing a beat, and bonnie feels as though she could be healed by her smile. if only the world worked that way.
“hey, marcy,” she says with a raspy voice. it’s barely audible and followed by a nasty cough.

“oh my glob, are you sick?” marceline asks like it wasn’t the most obvious thing ever. “oh, i’m sorry, i wouldn’t have come over if i knew you were.”
bonnie shakes her head. “no, it’s ok. i’m glad you came, i wanted to see you.”
“aw, you’re so sweet. come on, let’s get you back into bed, and i’ll stay for a little bit.”

tucking her back into bed, marceline floats back down and takes bonnie’s hand in hers. their fingers slot in together perfectly, and having her around is truly the best medicine she could have asked for. she should still take her usual one though.
“i missed you,” marceline says softly before kissing her. “i’m sorry you’re sick.”

it took bonnie a second to process it, but marceline had just kissed her. she kissed her on the lips while she’s sick. she’s going to get sick.
“marcy, don’t kiss me,” bonnie scolds, feeling cold and weak as she can barely stay awake. “you could catch my cold, and i don’t want you getting sick.”

“nah, i’ll be fine. don’t worry about me, bonnie, my vampire immune system is different. just take care of yourself, alright?” marceline kisses her again, and this time, she just accepts it. bonnie really is too tired to fight it, and it’s not like it’s making anything worse. it’s all she needs right now, and it’s all she’ll ever need for the rest of her life.

with marceline’s hand in hers, bonnie drifts to sleep as her wonderful girlfriend hums her to sleep. it’s a song that she wrote, and as lovely as it is and as much as she wants to understand it, it’s the perfect thing to fall asleep too. she’s sure that once she’s awake and feels better, marceline will play it for her once more, and bonnie can’t wait to hear it.

she’s also pretty sure that marceline will get sick from her, but that’s a problem for another day.
