The kitchen had a warm light casting a warm glow over the countertops and the scattered ingredients that now occupied every available inch of space. It was a quiet day, the kind of day that felt suspended in time, perfect for the sort of domestic whimsy that Scarlet lived for.
Scarlet leaned against the counter, his chin resting in his palm, watching Guide with an expression of pure, unadulterated adoration. To anyone else, Guide was a beacon of helpfulness and cheer, a bubbly presence that could brighten the dimmest room. To Scarlet, Guide was everything—his creation, his companion, and the absolute fun he could toy around with.
Guide was currently in his element. He was humming a light, airy tune, his movements precise and fluid as he measured out flour. He looked focused, although, sometimes pausing.
"You're staring again," Guide said, his voice a melodic lilt. He didn't look up, but a small, grin tugged at the corners of his lips.
Scarlet didn't even try to deny it. He let out a soft, playful huff. "Can you blame me? You're incredibly focused. It’s interesting."
Guide finally looked up, his eyes wide and sparkling with a mixture of modesty and amusement. "We are trying to bake, Scarlet! We can't make a cake if you're too busy admiring the baker."
"I can do both," Scarlet teased, straightening up and sliding closer. He invaded Guide’s personal space with an easy, practiced familiarity, his voice dropping to a playful chirp. "Besides, I'm the one providing the moral support. That's a crucial part of the process."
Guide giggled, a sound like wind chimes in a summer breeze, and gently pushed Scarlet’s chest to create a few inches of breathing room. "Your 'moral support' usually involves trying to distract me so I'll get pissed. Now, be a helpful creator and crack these eggs for me."
Scarlet grinned, his eyes glinting with mischief. He loved this dynamic—the way Guide could be so calm and composed, yet so easily flustered by a well-placed comment. Scarlet took the eggs, but instead of focusing on the bowl, he spent a good thirty seconds trying to balance one on the back of his hand, humming a discordant tune just to see if he could get a reaction out of Guide.
"Scarlet, please," Guide laughed, though there was no real heat in the request. He loved Scarlet’s playfulness; it was the spark that kept their lives vibrant.
"Okay, okay!," Scarlet announced. He turned to the bowl with a flourish, intending to crack the eggs with a dramatic flair.
Unfortunately, Scarlet’s enthusiasm often outweighed his coordination. he pressed too hard. Instead of a clean break, the egg exploded in his hand, a significant portion of the yolk and white sliding down his wrist and splashing haphazardly across the counter.
There was a moment of stunned silence.
Guide stared at the mess, then at Scarlet, who was currently staring at his own hand in shock.
"I think," Guide said softly, his voice trembling with suppressed laughter, "that you messed up."
Scarlet looked up, pouting. "The egg was defective. I’m certain of it."
Guide burst into a fit of laughter, his shoulders shaking as he reached for a towel to help clean up. "Defective? You just squeezed it too hard! Oh, Scarlet, you're hopeless."
"I am not hopeless," Scarlet countered, though he was grinning now. He used the opportunity to lean in, brushing his shoulder against Guide's. "I'm just... creatively destructive."
Despite the rocky start, they continued. Guide took the lead, his patience an endless well. He guided Scarlet through the process, showing him how to fold the batter gently so as not to lose the air, and how to grease the pans properly. Guide was a natural; he moved with a serene confidence, his warmth radiating outward, making the kitchen feel even cozier than it already was.
Scarlet, however, remained a chaotic variable. He spent more time trying to sneak tastes of the batter than he did mixing it. He spent more time teasing Guide about how "perfect" he was being than he did reading the instructions.
"You know," Scarlet murmured, leaning close to Guide’s ear as the cake finally went into the oven. "I think you're too good at this. It's almost unfair. You're helpful, you're fun, you're a master baker... what am I supposed to do to keep up?"
Guide leaned back into him, his head resting against Scarlet’s shoulder. "You just have to be you, Scarlet. I like that part."
They waited for the timer to go off, spending the interval in a tangle of limbs on the nearby kitchen bench, sharing soft kisses and quiet conversation. The anticipation built, the smell of vanilla and sugar beginning to waft through the air.
Then, the timer dinged.
"Here we go!" Guide exclaimed, springing up with an eager bounce in his step.
He carefully opened the oven and pulled out the cake. For a few seconds, it looked promising. It had risen well, and the golden-brown color was exactly right. But as Guide set it on the cooling rack, a soft, wet squelch sounded from the center.
As if on cue, the middle of the cake slowly, agonizingly began to sink. It didn't just dip; it collapsed into a crater of underbaked batter, leaving a sad, sunken hole in the middle of what should have been decent.
Scarlet peered over Guide’s shoulder. "Well... it's a volcano cake! Very avant-garde."
Guide sighed, though he was smiling. He looked at the sunken cake and then back at Scarlet. "I followed the instructions perfectly. I don't understand what happened."
Scarlet rubbed his chin, pretending to be thoughtful. "Hmm. I might have... accidentally added a bit more milk than you asked for while you were getting the pans. I thought it looked a little dry."
Guide froze. He slowly turned to look at Scarlet, staring. "You what?"
Scarlet let out a loud, delighted laugh, dodging Guide’s attempt to playfully swat his arm. "It was an experiment! I wanted to see if we could make it extra moist!"
"You ruined the cake!" Guide huffed, though he was giggling again, the sound bright and infectious.
"I didn't ruin it; I evolved it," Scarlet teased, pulling Guide into a tight hug from behind. "But since I'm such a benevolent creator, I'll let you teach me how to do it right. Again. From the top."
Guide groaned, but he leaned his head back against Scarlet’s chest, his expression one of pure contentment. "Fine. But this time, you are banned from 'improving' the recipe."
"Deal,"
…
The second attempt was a more coordinated effort. Scarlet actually tried to focus, though his nature wouldn't allow him to be completely still. He stayed close to Guide, their movements syncing up as they worked together. There was something profoundly fun about the process—the shared space, the rhythmic sound of the whisk, the way Guide would occasionally lean into Scarlet for support.
Guide was in high spirits, his bubbly energy filling the room. He was talking about a new recipe he wanted to try next time .. If Scarlet didn’t run it, maybe.
"And then we could try a lemon tart! Or maybe something with raspberries! I think the tartness would balance the sweetness of the cream, and—"
Guide stopped abruptly as he realized he had accidentally flicked a bit of the batter while gesturing. He didn't notice that a small, creamy speck of vanilla batter had landed right on the apple of his cheek.
Scarlet stopped talking. He stopped moving. He just stared.
From Scarlet’s perspective, Guide looked like a painting. His eyes were bright, his expression open and happy, and that tiny dot of batter on his cheek made him look endearing. It was a small imperfection on a perfect being, and it triggered something primal and playful in Scarlet.
Guide noticed the silence. "What? Is there something on my face?"
Guide reached up to wipe his cheek, but Scarlet was faster.
In one fluid motion, Scarlet stepped forward, closing the gap between them. Before Guide could react, Scarlet leaned in and, with a quick, deft movement, flicked his tongue across Guide’s cheek, licking the speck of batter away.
Guide froze, his breath hitching in his throat. His eyes widened, and a deep, scorching crimson flooded his face, spreading to his cheeks. He looked like he had just been struck by lightning, his mouth slightly agape.
Scarlet pulled back just a few inches, a smug, playful grin playing on his lips. "Mmm. Vanilla. My favorite."
Guide let out a small, strangled noise, something between a gasp and mock annoyance. "Scarlet!"
"What?" Scarlet teased, his voice dropping an octave, giggling softly. "You had something on your face. I was just being helpful. You're the helpful one, remember? I'm just following your lead."
Guide’s heart was hammering against his ribs, a frantic rhythm that Scarlet could almost feel. Guide looked at him, his expression a mixture of shock and fluster. He tried to look annoyed, but the way his eyes softened and the way he leaned instinctively toward Scarlet gave him away.
"You are... the most annoying person I have ever known," Guide whispered, though he made no effort to move away.
"And yet, you love me," Scarlet replied, his voice brimming with confidence.
Guide beamed, his bubbly nature returning, though the blush remained. "Shut up. Because if you ruin the second cake, I might actually have to kick you out of the kitchen."
"Worth it!" Scarlet laughed, before leaning down and fumbling on the ground, whimpering in pain as Guide stares in concern - Yet, he doesn’t help.
As Guide happily munched on his piece, a small crumb landed on the corner of his lip.
Scarlet saw it. He smirked.
He smirked.
The crumb was a tiny, insignificant thing, a golden speck of cake clinging to the curve of Guide’s lower lip. To anyone else, it would have been an afterthought, something to be wiped away with a napkins or a quick swipe of a thumb. To Scarlet, it was an invitation. It was a strategic opportunity for more of the delightful flustered reactions that Guide provided so generously.
Scarlet didn't move immediately. He lingered in the space between them, letting the silence stretch, his gaze fixed intently on that single crumb. He watched the way Guide chewed, the way his throat moved as he swallowed, and the way his eyes remained bright and unsuspecting.
"You've got something..." Scarlet started, his voice trailing off into a low, teasing hum.
Guide paused, his fork halfway to his mouth. He blinked, his expression shifting from pure bliss to a slight, confused frown. "What? Where?"
He began to pat his face with the back of his hand, missing the spot entirely. He was searching his cheeks, his chin, his forehead, his movements becoming increasingly frantic and clumsy in his attempt to find the culprit. The more Guide scrambled, the wider Scarlet’s grin became. The sight of the usually composed and helpful Guide becoming a whirlwind of confused energy was a feast in itself.
"Over here," Scarlet laughed.
Before Guide could process the direction of the voice, Scarlet lunged. He didn't use his hand. Instead, he mirrored the boldness of the batter incident, leaning in and capturing that tiny crumb with a swift, precise lick.
The contact was brief, but the effect was instantaneous. Guide stiffened, his entire body locking up as if he’d been hit by a static shock. A soft, startled "eep!" escaped his lips, and the blush returned with a vengeance, flooding his face in a wave of vivid pink. He froze, his fork still poised in mid-air, staring at Scarlet with wide eyes.
Scarlet pulled back just enough to see the chaos he had caused. He looked utterly pleased with himself, his eyes dancing with mischief. "Mmm. Even better than the batter. I think the baking process really brought out the sweetness."
Guide let out a long, shaky breath, his chest heaving. He looked like he wanted to scream, to hide, and to lean closer all at once. "Scarlet! You can't just do that!"
"I can't?" Scarlet asked, tilting his head with a look of mock innocence. "Why not? It was a crumb. I was simply assisting you in your cleaning process. I thought you’d appreciate the efficiency. After all, you’re the one who’s always talking about being helpful."
Guide groaned, finally dropping his fork onto the plate with a clatter. He covered his face with his hands, though the gaps between his fingers revealed eyes that were sparkling with affection. "You are impossible. Absolutely, fundamentally impossible. I create a perfect cake, a *perfect* cake, mind you, because I managed to keep you from sabotaging it and you ruin everything again."
"It's not ruining anything," Scarlet teased, sliding his arm around Guide’s shoulder and pulling him flush against his side. He felt the warmth of Guide's body, the rhythmic thrum of his heart still racing from the shock. "And admit it, you love it when I'm 'impossible'."
Guide sighed, the sound vibrating against Scarlet's chest. He leaned into the embrace, his resistance melting away as it always did. "I do. Unfortunately for my sanity, I really do."
They sat there for a moment, the air thick with the scent of vanilla and the lingering surprise of their interaction. The second cake was indeed a triumph. It stood proud on the plate, a golden-brown masterpiece with a moist, tender crumb that melted on the tongue. It was a testament to Guide's skill and Scarlet's mostly forced restraint.
Scarlet looked down at his own piece of cake, which he had been neglecting in favor of tormenting Guide. He picked up his fork, intending to take a bite, but as he did, he noticed a change in Guide’s expression.
The blush was still there, but the shock had faded, replaced by a glint of something new. A spark. A mischievous challenge.
Guide had shifted. He was no longer the flustered victim; he was watching Scarlet with a focused, playful intensity. A small, determined smile played on his lips, a mirror of the one Scarlet had worn just moments ago.
"You know," Guide said, his voice regaining its melodic, bubbly quality, but with an added edge of mischief. "You've spent the last hour distracting me, teasing me, and 'helping' me in the most unconventional ways possible."
Scarlet raised an eyebrow, sensing a shift in the wind. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I've been a model of behavior."
Guide giggled, and the sound was a warning. "Oh, really? Then I'm sure you won't mind if I take over the 'helpful' role for a little while."
Before Scarlet could ask what that meant, Guide moved. With a speed and precision that reminded Scarlet exactly who the organized one in the relationship was, Guide snatched Scarlet’s fork out of his hand.
"Hey!" Scarlet protested, reaching for it.
Guide dodged him with a graceful pivot, stepping back and holding the fork aloft like a trophy. He carved out a generous, perfect piece of the cake, ensuring it had a bit of the fluffy interior and a touch of the caramelized edge.
"You've been so busy talking and teasing," Guide beamed, his eyes twinkling, "that I'm worried you aren't actually enjoying the dessert. As your companion, it's my duty to make sure you're properly nourished."
Scarlet chuckled, leaning back against the counter. "I can feed myself, Guide. I'm a grown man. A creator, even."
"And as the master baker of this," Guide countered, stepping back into Scarlet's space, "I insist that the cake be sampled under my supervision. Now, open up!"
Scarlet blinked. He wasn't used to Guide being the one to take charge in this specific, assertive way. Usually, he was the one pushing buttons and invading boundaries. Seeing Guide do it with that same cheerful smile was unexpectedly thrilling.
Scarlet decided to play along. He clamped his lips shut, a challenging glint in his eyes. He shook his head slowly, a smug expression on his face. Let's see how far you'll go, he thought.
Guide’s smile widened. He didn't look annoyed; he looked delighted. "Oh, we're playing the 'stubborn' game? I can do stubborn. I spent forty-five minutes convincing you that flour doesn't belong in the frosting, Scarlet. I have plenty of patience."
Guide leaned in closer, his scent, a mix of vanilla and something uniquely *him* enveloping Scarlet. He held the fork just inches from Scarlet's lips, the cake trembling slightly.
"Open," Guide commanded softly, the word a playful directive.
Scarlet remained steadfast, though his heart had begun to pick up speed. He loved this. He loved seeing this side of Guide, the side that was caring but firm, the side that knew exactly how to handle Scarlet's chaos.
"Still nothing?" Guide teased, his voice a melodic lilt. He began to move the fork in a slow, tantalizing circle just in front of Scarlet's mouth. "It's such a shame. This piece is the best part. It's perfectly moist. The vanilla is just the right strength. It would be a tragedy to let it go to waste."
Scarlet's resolve was beginning to crumble. The smell of the cake was intoxicating, and the sight of Guide—flushed, determined, and utterly adorable was making it very hard to concentrate on being difficult.
"I'm not hungry," Scarlet lied, his voice a bit strained.
Guide let out a soft, knowing laugh. "Your stomach just growled, Scarlet. Your body is betraying you."
Scarlet gasped in mock outrage. "It did not!"
"It did," Guide insisted. He shifted his stance, stepping even closer, until their chests were nearly touching. He used his free hand to gently cup Scarlet's chin, his thumb brushing against the line of his jaw. The touch was warm and grounding, contrasting with the playful energy of the moment. "Now, be a good creator and eat your cake."
The combination of the command and the tenderness was the final blow. Scarlet felt a shiver run down his spine. He looked up into Guide's sparkling eyes and realized he had been completely outmaneuvered.
With a dramatic sigh of defeat, Scarlet opened his mouth.
Guide didn't hesitate. He slid the piece of cake inside with a triumphant grin.
As Scarlet chewed, the flavors exploded across his palate, rich, sweet, and perfectly balanced. It was, without a doubt, the best thing he had ever tasted, not just because of the ingredients, but because of the victory Guide was currently savoring.
"See?" Guide chirped, his voice bubbling with joy. "Isn't that better?"
Scarlet swallowed, his expression one of dazed contentment. "Fine. You win. It's delicious."
"I always win when it comes to baking," Guide replied, though he didn't pull away. He remained in Scarlet's space, his hand still resting on Scarlet's chin.
"Don't get cocky," Scarlet murmured, though there was no heat in it. He tried to lean in for another nuzzle, but Guide deftly moved the fork again, blocking his path.
"Not so fast! You haven't finished your portion," Guide declared.
For the next ten minutes, the roles were completely reversed. Guide became the benevolent dictator of the dessert. He carefully sliced the cake into small, manageable pieces, insisting on feeding them to Scarlet one by one.
Each time Scarlet tried to grab the fork or lean in for a distraction, Guide would playfully dodge him, shaking his head with a small, teasing smile.
"Patience, Scarlet. Good things come to those who wait," Guide told him, popping another piece of cake into his mouth.
Scarlet found himself surprisingly compliant. He leaned back, letting Guide take care of him, enjoying the sensation of being looked after. It was a rare shift in their dynamic—a moment where the creator became the cared-for, and the creation became the provider.
He watched Guide's focused expression as he ensured every bite was perfect. He watched the way Guide's eyes lit up every time Scarlet hummed in appreciation. It was a domestic scene of pure, unadulterated fluff, and Scarlet cherished every second of it.
"You know," Scarlet said after the final piece had been consumed, "I think I like this version of you. The 'force-feeding' version."
Guide laughed, finally setting the fork down and stepping back, though he kept a playful grip on Scarlet's shirt. "Don't get used to it. This was a one-time reward for actually following the recipe."
"A reward for me, or a reward for you?" Scarlet teased, reaching out to pull Guide back into his arms.
"Both," Guide admitted, leaning his head against Scarlet's shoulder. "I liked seeing you speechless for once."
Scarlet let out a loud, delighted laugh, squeezing Guide tight. "Speechless? Me? Never. I'm just saving my energy for the next time I find something on your face."
Guide groaned, but he was smiling, his warmth radiating through his clothes. "I'm banning you from the kitchen for a week."
"You wouldn't," Scarlet whispered, his voice full of playful confidence. "You'd miss my 'moral support' too much."
Guide didn't answer, but the way he squeezed Scarlet back was answer enough. They stood there in the warm glow of the kitchen, surrounded by the remnants of their chaotic baking adventure—the flour-dusted counters, the discarded eggshells, and the empty plate that had held a perfect cake.
The silence that followed wasn't the quiet of a day suspended in time, but the comfortable silence of two people who knew exactly where they fit in each other's lives. Scarlet looked at Guide, his heart full of a tenderness that transcended his usual teasing.
He had created Guide to be helpful, to be cheerful, to be a beacon of light. But in the process, Guide had become the light of Scarlet's own life, the one person who could match his energy, challenge his mischief, and love him through every "creatively destructive" impulse.
"You’re so stupid," Scarlet murmured, his voice devoid of actual annoyance.
Guide looked up, his eyes soft and brimming with an affection that mirrored Scarlet's own. "I love you too, Scarlet. Even if you are hopeless at cracking eggs."
"Hey!" Scarlet protested, but he was grinning.
As they began the slow process of cleaning up the kitchen, a task that, predictably, involved more splashing of soapy water and playful chasing than actual scrubbing—the warmth of the day lingered. The kitchen remained a sanctuary of domestic whimsy, a place where mistakes were turned into "evolutions" and crumbs were turned into kisses.
And as Scarlet watched Guide humming that same light, airy tune while drying the dishes, he decided that he didn't mind being the one fed for a change. In fact, he was already looking forward to hanging out with Guide again.
