Work Text:
The house was quiet, bathed in the soft, amber glow of the late evening sun that filtered through the sheer curtains of their shared bedroom. It was a space they had meticulously curated over the last few months—a sanctuary of soft textures and muted colors, designed to be a haven for both Joshua and the life currently growing within him.
Jeonghan had spent the last hour in his office, finishing up some lingering work, but the persistent, gentle tugging on his mating bond had drawn him out. It wasn’t a cry of distress or a spike of pain; rather, it was a soft, melodious hum of contentment that vibrated against his own consciousness like the low pluck of a cello string.
He moved through the hallway with the silent, predatory grace of an alpha, his footsteps soundless on the plush carpet. As he approached the bedroom door, which stood slightly ajar, he stopped.
Joshua was curled up in the oversized reading chair they had placed by the window. He was wearing one of Jeonghan’s old, oversized hoodies—the scent of sandalwood and rain clinging to the fabric like a protective shield—and his hands were cupped gently around the gentle swell of his belly.
He was humming. It was a soft, simple melody, one that Jeonghan recognized from Joshua’s own childhood stories—a lullaby his mother used to sing, sweet and drifting, carrying the weight of ancient, quiet love.
Jeonghan felt his chest tighten, a rush of overwhelming emotion that was far more powerful than any adrenaline he had ever felt on stage. He watched, spellbound, as Joshua’s head swayed slightly to the rhythm, his eyes closed, his face glowing with a soft, ethereal radiance. The scent of cherry blossoms and honey in the room was thick, enriched by the unmistakable, sweet undertone of maternal—or paternal—devotion. It was the scent of a nest being built, not with blankets, but with love.
Jeonghan took a steadying breath, letting his own alpha pheromones settle into a deep, grounding warmth. He didn’t want to startle Joshua, but he couldn't stay away for another second. He stepped into the room, his presence announced only by the gentle shift of air.
Joshua’s eyes fluttered open, and the hum died away, replaced by a soft, startled smile. "Jeonghanie?"
"Don't stop," Jeonghan whispered, his voice thick with unvoiced promises.
He walked over, the floorboards silent under his feet, and sank to his knees in front of the chair. He didn't say anything more; he simply reached out, his large hands carefully encompassing Joshua’s, pressing them firmly against the curve of his belly.
He felt it then—a tiny, fluttery movement beneath the skin. It was the most miraculous thing he had ever felt, a heartbeat separate from his own, a life they had created in the quiet, private corners of their love.
Jeonghan bowed his head, resting his forehead against the apex of Joshua’s stomach. He closed his eyes and began to hum, picking up the melody exactly where Joshua had left off. His voice was deeper, a low-register rumble that resonated through his own chest and directly into the space Joshua occupied.
As they hummed together, the harmony felt like the foundation of their entire existence. Jeonghan began to release his scent—not the sharp, assertive scent he wore to the world, but the soft, intimate musk of a mated alpha who has found his harbor. He let it wash over Joshua, heavy and sweet, a cocoon of absolute safety.
"Little one," Jeonghan murmured, his voice barely a breath, meant only for the ears of the small life within. "You are so incredibly loved. You have no idea."
Joshua let out a shaky, happy breath, his fingers carding through Jeonghan’s hair. "He—or she—is very active tonight," Joshua whispered, his voice wet with unshed tears. "I think they like your voice, Jeonghanie. Your alpha scent... it’s making them calm down."Jeonghan lifted his head just enough to look up at Joshua. His eyes were dark, swirling with the intensity of his devotion. He leaned forward, pressing a lingering, reverent kiss to Joshua’s belly, right where he felt the faint thrum of a kick.
"I promise," Jeonghan said, his tone shifting into the formal, unbreakable cadence of a vow. "I promise that every day of your life, you will be safe. You will be warm. You will never have to wonder if you are wanted, because you are the center of my world. You and your beautiful, wonderful omma."
Joshua leaned forward, pressing his forehead against Jeonghan’s. Their scents swirled together—sandalwood and cherry blossoms, rain and honey—creating a thick, aromatic haze of domestic bliss.
"They know," Joshua whispered, his eyes searching Jeonghan’s. "They know they’re safe with us. I can feel it in the bond. They feel our love, Jeonghanie. They feel all of it."
Jeonghan reached up, tracing the line of Joshua’s jaw with his thumb. The intimacy of the moment was so profound it felt holy. He thought about the life they lived—the cameras, the stages, the frantic pace of their careers—and then he looked at the quiet, rounded miracle in front of him. This was the only thing that mattered. This was the only legacy he cared to leave behind.
"I’m going to be the best father," Jeonghan whispered, more to himself than to Joshua. "I’m going to be there for every step. I’ll hold you, and I’ll hold them, and the world can do whatever it wants outside these walls, but in here... in here, everything will be perfect."
Joshua’s smile grew, radiant and soft. "You’re already the best, Jeonghanie. You were the best before this, and you’ll be the best after. We are so lucky to have you."
Jeonghan pulled himself up onto the edge of the chair, gathering Joshua into his arms. He was careful, ever-mindful of the weight they both carried, shifting so that Joshua was nestled securely against his chest. He pulled the oversized hoodie closer around them both, creating a small, portable nest of their shared scent.
They sat like that for a long time, rocking slightly in the chair as the stars began to poke through the evening sky. They didn't need to say anything else. The promises had been made; the love had been felt.
Outside, the city continued its relentless, chaotic pulse, but inside the bedroom, time seemed to have stopped. There was only the steady beat of their two hearts, the gentle hum of the lullaby they had shared, and the quiet, rhythmic pulsing of a third life, growing strong and healthy in the space between them.
As the night deepened, Jeonghan continued to scent Joshua’s belly, a rhythmic, protective gesture that spoke of his dedication. He knew there would be hard days ahead, sleepless nights, and challenges he couldn't yet imagine, but as he felt the tiny movement against his palm, he knew he was ready. He was an alpha who had found his pack, his mate, and his future, and he would spend the rest of his life ensuring they remained exactly as they were tonight: safe, cherished, and entirely, profoundly loved.
