Even In Your Dreams I'll Be By Your Side

Summary:

"It was just a dream," Joshua whispered, his voice trembling. "I was… I was alone, Jeonghan. I couldn’t find you."

Jeonghan’s arms tightened around him, a silent vow manifested in muscle and bone. He shifted, pulling the duvet up over both of them, sealing them into a private, dark cocoon. He began to run his hand over Joshua’s side in long, rhythmic strokes, his touch deliberate and soothing.

"Never," Jeonghan promised, his voice vibrating through their contact. "I am not going anywhere, and you are never lost. You could be in the darkest part of the world, and I would find you. I would follow your scent until the end of time if I had to. You are never, ever alone."

Work Text:

The silence of the penthouse was usually a comfort, a stark contrast to the deafening roar of arenas and the relentless flashing of camera lights. But tonight, it felt thin, brittle.

Joshua woke with a sharp, ragged gasp that seemed to tear through the stillness of the bedroom. His heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs, a hummingbird trapped in a cage of bone. His skin felt clammy, chilled by the phantom cold of the nightmare he had just escaped—a dream of being lost, of the stage lights fading into an abyss, of reaching out for a hand that wasn't there.

His instincts were in a state of chaotic flux, his pheromones spiking with the sharp, sour tang of fear, a scent that Joshua hated with every fiber of his being because it felt like a betrayal of his own strength.

He didn't have to wait more than a heartbeat for the reaction.

Before he could even fully register the waking world, the bed shifted. Jeonghan, ever the vigilant alpha, was moving. Even in the deepest stages of sleep, Jeonghan’s instincts were tethered to Joshua’s, a biological alarm system that never truly deactivated.

"Shua? Hey, look at me. You’re here. You’re with me."

Jeonghan’s voice was a low, gravelly anchor, still thick with sleep but laced with an immediate, commanding authority that sought to ground Joshua. Before Joshua could find his breath, he was pulled backward. Jeonghan didn’t hesitate; he gathered Joshua into his arms, tucking him against his chest so tightly that there wasn't a sliver of space left between them.

It was the classic spooning position, one that Joshua had always found incredibly grounding, but tonight it felt like life support.

Jeonghan’s warmth seeped into Joshua’s shivering frame instantly. His scent—a deep, earthy, and impossibly soothing blend of ancient cedarwood and the sharp, clean ozone of a coming storm—began to bloom in the room. It wasn't the aggressive, territorial scent of an alpha in a fight; it was the soft, enveloping musk of a mate offering protection. It wrapped around Joshua like a heavy, weighted blanket, pressing down on the jagged edges of his anxiety and smoothing them out.

"I’m here," Jeonghan murmured, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of Joshua’s temple. "You’re safe. Nothing can reach you in this bed. I’m right here."

Joshua squeezed his eyes shut, letting out a long, shuddering sob that he hadn't realized he was holding. He pressed his back harder into Jeonghan’s chest, needing to feel the steady, rhythmic thud of the alpha’s heart—a heartbeat that was currently beating only for him.

He continued to pour his pheromones into the space between them, purposefully over-scenting the sheets and the air until the room was thick with the protective signature of his presence. It was a primal form of reassurance, a message sent directly to Joshua’s omega side: You are are protected, you are home.

Joshua felt the terror finally begin to recede, replaced by the heavy, syrupy exhaustion that always followed a panic attack. The scent of cedarwood was so intoxicatingly safe that his eyelids grew heavy, the remaining adrenaline in his veins turning into a languid, humming warmth.

"Tell me something," Joshua murmured, his voice thick with oncoming sleep. "Anything."Jeonghan hummed a low, tuneless melody, his chin resting on Joshua’s shoulder. "I’m thinking about the garden we’re going to plant in the spring," he whispered, his tone gentle and mundane, designed to pull Joshua back to reality. "The lilies you wanted. And maybe those climbing roses for the terrace. You’ll be able to sit out there in the morning with your tea, and I’ll be inside, and you’ll see me through the glass, and you’ll know I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right there, watching over you."

He continued, painting pictures with his words—simple, domestic images of a life built on stability. As he spoke, he never stopped the soothing friction of his hand on Joshua’s arm, nor did he cease the steady, rhythmic scent-marking of Joshua’s neck and hair.

Joshua’s breathing began to sync with Jeonghan’s. He could feel the alpha’s chin moving against his shoulder, the gentle vibration of his chest as he spoke. The nightmare—the cold, the abyss, the feeling of being untethered—faded into a distant memory, pushed aside by the suffocatingly sweet reality of Jeonghan’s love.

"Jeonghan?"

"Yeah, my love?"

"Thank you."

Jeonghan pressed a lingering kiss to the junction of Joshua’s neck, his scent flaring for a moment in a protective surge. "Don't ever thank me for taking care of you, Shua. It’s what I was born to do."

As the minutes stretched into the late hours of the night, the room settled into a heavy, peaceful quiet. The shadows in the corner of the room no longer looked threatening; they looked like nothing more than the furniture of their shared life.

Joshua felt a final, sleepy ripple of contentment run through him. He reached up, tangling his fingers with Jeonghan’s hand where it rested over his chest, and pulled it closer. He felt Jeonghan nuzzle into his hair, a final, lingering mark of his alpha’s affection before the alpha himself finally surrendered to the pull of rest.

They were two souls, long ago knit together by the unspoken laws of their nature, finding their way back to one another in the dark. There was no room left for fear, no room for the ghosts of bad dreams. There was only the warmth, the scent of cedarwood and home, and the absolute, unwavering certainty that when the sun rose, they would wake up exactly as they were now—side by side, anchored in the only thing that mattered in a world that never stopped moving.

Together, they drifted off, the deep, rhythmic breathing of the alpha and the soft, steady sighs of the omega weaving a lullaby of their own, holding them fast until the morning light.
