Summary
Sally Jackson understood the power of names.
She knew that a child born under the forbidden oath of the three Kronides brothers would be punished. When her child was born, she named her Persephone.
It was a desperate plea that Hades might excuse his brother’s mistake and take pity on a girl bearing his beloved wife’s name. She hoped that Persephone’s name might call forth something ancient within Poseidon something that had existed long before he was swallowed by his father, when, during the Mycenaean age, he had once ruled the Underworld.
Persephone was a name that promised return. Whatever winter awaited her daughter, spring would come again, and she would find her way home to warmth, and to her mother’s waiting arms.
The broken oath of the Styx and Hades’ curse upon the Oracle would have consequences unforeseen. The gift of prophecy would find its way to Percy, awakening a seerhood no one could explain.
Poseidon would announce that he and his wife had a newborn daughter taking the title Ἡ Ὑστάτη Μαργαρίτης τῆς Ἀενάου Θαλάσσης.
