Chapter Text
12 years before Bilbo was set on his quest to reclaim Erebor with Thorin's Company, he was just a regular Hobbit in The Shire.
This afternoon Bilbo was taking a nice stroll through The Shire. It was a nice afternoon, the sun was shining, there was a nice, crisp breeze, and not a cloud in sight. Bilbo was thinking about what he wanted for his Luncheon.
In fact, he got so caught up in his thoughts that he didn't even notice that he was wandering close to the edge of The Shire, he was pulled out of his thoughts when he almost bumped into a tree.
“Oh dear,” Bilbo muttered, he was about to turn around and head back to his home when he noticed something shimmering from behind some bushes. Bilbo knew that he should ignore it and go back to his home but his curiosity got the better of him.
He pushed past the bushes and saw an egg, a rather large egg, roughly larger than an ostrich egg and covered in iridescent white scales, Bilbo had never seen an egg like this before, Bilbo reached to touch it and it was warm, really warm,
Bilbo looked around for whatever laid this egg but found nothing, there was nobody except him, the egg wasn't in a nest either, it was like whoever laid it abandoned it.
‘What irresponsible parents would abandon their egg’ Bilbo thought, he couldn't just leave it here, it could freeze or a predator could pick it off, so Bilbo picked the egg up and started to make his way back towards Bag End.
The egg was heavy, Bilbo slightly struggled to keep it in his grasp, another Hobbit noticed Bilbo
“Excuse me, Mr Baggins,” the Hobbit said “If you don't mind me asking, what is that?” he asked, pointing at the egg
“Well it's an egg, obviously,” Bilbo said,
“Well it's a rather strange looking egg” the Hobbit said, “Where did you find it?”
“I found it behind some bushes,” Bilbo said, “I believe it was abandoned, so I've taken it upon myself to care for it until it hatches”
“Well if you say so,” the Hobbit said before returning to his own business
Bilbo continued on his way back home with the egg when another person spotted the egg
“Well that's a mighty big egg you got there Mr Baggins,” they said
“Yes it is” Bilbo replied, he wanted to stop being interrupted and be allowed to just go home
“You could make a big omelette with that” the Hobbit said with a snicker,
Bilbo felt a strange surge of protective instincts, “How dare you say something like that!” Bilbo snapped “Can't you tell that there's something inside of there”
The Hobbit looked a bit confused, “I was only joking” they said
“Well jokes are supposed to funny” Bilbo said before continuing on his way home
“What crawled up his arse and died,” the Hobbit muttered said
‘Why did I do that?’ Bilbo thought ‘That was rather rude of me’
Bilbo finally made it to Bag End, when he got inside he made a makeshift nest with blankets and pillows near his fireplace and put the egg in it,
“Alright, time to figure out what you belong to,” Bilbo said as he went to go get his books
***
After hours of skimming through books Bilbo found nothing
It wasn't a chicken egg or a duck egg or a goose egg, it was too big and scaley
“Well aren't you a little mystery,” Bilbo said with a chuckle
Bilbo noticed that it was getting dark and he had missed afternoon tea
Bilbo got up and went to him make some tea
Though he didn't when the egg gave a small twitch and a small crack started to form
